A big hello from a Type R owner

Featured Replies

Hi

Just been referred by Type R forum members to come here to find more info about the Skoda Octavia VRS 06 I am hoping to purchase in the coming month. I still have my Type R but I desperately need something bigger and just-as-fast ish family car due to the arrival of my new born baby and this particular model really fits the bill. Especially when it's so good value for money compared to other German marques.

I can see a few under 50k mileage examples on pistonheads under £9k, which is my maximum budget. Coming from a Honda I really need something that's equally cheap to run and not cost a bomb to maintain. You might be biased but is this the right car? What kind of issues should I be worried about? and is it reliable? Just how strong are these VW engines if well looked after?

Any kind of thoughts and suggestions is welcome as I just need that reassurance this is the right family car for me and my family.

Cheers

you'll enjoy the vRS mate. turbo power is so much more accessable without having to drive like a maniac and get noticed. understated and quick is what i like about it.

have a look about for lower miliage cars is my reccomendation. i think 9k could get you better than around the 50K mark. mine is only going for 10K and is much lower miliage than that

Welcome :)

And yes, they are good cars, and even coming from a Honda should not disappoint :)

welcome to briskoda

Hello and Welcome to own Briskoda.

I used to own a EP3 CTR Premier the same as pictured above. I loved it and am still looking for another one.

welcome mate,u'll find the build quality head n shoulders above the ctr,i had my civic for 6 years and loved it to bits, but kids come along and you have to grow up a bit lol, don't dismiss the mk1 octy aswell as u get a performance car bargain for peanuts.go for it u won't regret it.

Welcome to Briskoda. I don't think you can go wrong tbh.

They're a nice big family car aswell as a hot hatch. Pretty nipppy, but slightly heavier than a CTR so not as quick. But still not miles away!

I've come from GTI6 (Fairly similar to a CTR) to a MKI Octavia vRS. It is a different drive, (as in, you wouldn't rag it like you would a CTR/GTI6 ), but will still keep you fairly satisfied! Handling is slighly different too, with the RS being that bit heavier, it's no where near as chuckable. ( But i suppose if it's going to be used as a family car, that won't really matter ) But still nice and firm!

Lovely CTR btw, and enjoy the site!

( I take it you are still keeping the CTR for the weekends? )

awesome family cars and a fair bit less manic than the type r........you dont have to thrash it to get the best.........although those hondas sure like to rev and would be faster on a twisty road.

Take your time looking assaid above......prices have gone up but what i can remember about the mk1 type r is that they hold their value fantastically well so you should get some cash to bargain with

also agree mk1 vrs a great bargain

Does that sort of mean you're regretting on getting a Skoda? Because I dont want that to happen. :S

My thoughts also. As much as I want to keep my car, it's just not practical at all.

Would you know of any major problems i should look out for? As i might start viewing VRS soon, i want to have the knowledge knowing what to spot on the day. As you know private buying can be a hit and miss thing, and i dont want to mess up as losing £9k is a great deal to me. I have seen a few members needing engine replaced or have a turbo blown, is that a frequent occurence? I am scared! :S

This might be asked before but how many miles have you guys managed from the GTI engine? and it have a thirst for engine oil like my type r?

I will be selling the CTR for the VRS (if the right one comes along) so i want to make sure this is it so to speak. hehe

Anyway the one i am looking at, is it classed as Mark 2? because there is a facelifted version now which got me slightly confused.

Edited by Mr Tse

Yes, It's a MK2. Good luck on your search!

Oh and make sure it's either Red Black or Silver. Race Blue is slightly :giggle:

Welcome :)

Good call I'd say. Yes really completely different to drive from the CTR, but I think you know that. Maybe it's worth taking a local one for a test drive, to see if you get on with it? But from your requirements and that you're looking at German marques, I'd say you've made the right call.

I`d save another grand and buy

vRSy's Vrs The last one doesn't say what engine the second is tatty inside and the 1st is on 17 inch wheels .

The second one is just reeling off equipment which is standard. Extras for that year were Dual Climate, rather than manual air con , much better, set it and leave it . Jumbo Box a lidded box between front seats ,can be heated or cooled linked to climate. Rear electric windows, front were standard . Cruise control and 18 inch wheels instead of 17. My car had all these fitted and later were a no cost option. The brake calipers changed from green to red at the end off 2006 so it saved them money < car is virtually a Golf GTI in different clothes> I would extend my warranty when the year is up as abs Pressure switch can fail. £1500 pounds to replace, you will find out about that on this forum. My car was out of warranty when mine failed, skoda paid half. It was fitted to all vag group cars though so not prone to just skodas. I have had mine 3 and half years and love it to bits, will keep it 2 more years. They are fast, mine remapped , and practical :thumbup:B)DSC00044.jpg

Yes I can already anticipate the characteristic of the engine. It should be effortless to drive in town unlike my Type R which is definitely not a good city car, as soon as i hit the traffic with it my feet, back and neck starts to ache. lol.

Thanks for your info bluvrs2,. it is exactly the info i am looking for. i didnt know those cars in the advertisements have that many issues. The first advert did state it comes with 18 inch alloys, i should think it has all of the standard equipments you have listed.

So for a 2006 model it should have all of those you have mentioned and maybe cambelt and water pump changed?

The abs pressure switch sounds like a nightmare. at what mileage does it normally go? In what way does that affect the car?

i didnt quite get the first bit of your msg. save 1 grand and get what? another member's VRS perhaps? I think i'd prefer a black, much classier.

I had a Skoda Fabia vRS and then a Honda Civic Type R. I sold it to come to University and pay for all my fees.

I'm the owner of a 1.2 16v Clio now and just hang around on Briskoda as I have made some great friends on here.

Yes it would be nice to have all the options. The ABS pressure switch can go randomly mine had only done 27500 miles when it happened . Still drove OK but no traction control. Just get dealer to specify what is covered .Yes sorry it was one of the others with smaller wheels. Regarding belts and pump skoda recommend a change at 4 years. if it has not been done £400 quid off price. The car i was talking about replied to your thread, that is his user name. You look after your cars as well it looks a minter . FL or face lift on the left of mine. It is ChrisRs car DSC00014.jpg

The problem being i most likely to buy from a private seller, the ABS pressure switch wont be covered by any warranty and it would be impossible to tell whether it had been repaired already. this is a tough one. just gotta hope i bump into a nice and honest seller. :S

so say i fork out £1500 to fix this issue, will this issue keep popping back? and the belts and pumps need replacing every 40k? that is a lot of maintanence! anything else i should look out for? you mentioned about warranty from dealer to cover this pressure switch issue, how much roughly per year do they charge?

very nice cars btw. the facelift version looks very mean :p

thanks again

Once it has been replaced,it is fine then on,< ABS> regarding belt i think skoda were just covering their backs it used to be 65000 miles and 7 0r something like that, just use it as bargaining tool. Get warranty from warranty direct covers everything almost. Car could be fine and never EVER fail. My warranty from them was £270 but there are 2 prices one is for dealer repair<mine> and the cheaper one you take it to one of their garages . But warranty is cheaper than if you have a failure , Check out for cover before you buy then you will not have to wait 90 days for wear and tear items

I've just come from a type s diesel and before that a type r. Picked up my approved used blue diesel vrs yesterday on an 07 plate with a years Skoda warranty and assistance cover thrown in. Not missing either hondas at all!

You will not be dissapointed.
