Front Spring Colour Codes

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what these mean, or where to find the information?

Having broken a spring I fitted a 2nd hand pair of replacement shock / spring assemblies today.

They were supplied as for a vRS, and the part numbers on the legs were identical so I went on and did it.

Looking at them afterwards I realised that the colours on the originals were Pink / Pink / White / White.

The replacements are Pink / White / White / White.

(I think it's pink - remember i'm a bloke, I can only recognise 6 colours)

It all goes together fine, and a on quick trial drive she seems to handle OK - maybe even better than recently.

Sits square and level, So I think everything os OK

Does the slightly different code colour pattern matter?

is the car an estate? 1 violet and 3 white are the springs off an estate, shouldnt really make much difference if you've fitted the pair, mostly they are there to help us identify whats fitted to your vehicle when we order new ones

No, it's a standard Hatchback.

Having driven it 10 miles into work this a.m. it is a lot better than it was, smoother and more responsive on bends etc., but that may also be the effect of the replacement shocks, as the others had probably done 95k miles from new (last time a spring broke I replaced the springs but kept the old shocks) and were probably getting at the replacement stage anyway.

I'll take your word that it's Violet (whatever colour that is)

Is there a chart or list of correct colours anywhere, possibly a URL - I couldn't track down any info on Google. It might be an idea if you know, to get it posted as a sticky, as gwe seem to be going through a period of broken springs on the forum atm.

if i posted what i use it wouldnt make any sense to anyone as its just a jagon of numbers and letters, my springs are 1 violet 4 yellow, like i say if you've fitted the pair it should be fine i wouldnt worry about it

Hi,

If you can get access to ETKA all the permutaions of springs are listed together with car type they are fitted to.

Octy sedan (hatchback) VRS has the following :-

Front (Illustration 411 - 00)

Part Number:..................... 1J0 411 105 AJ (for sports type running gear)

Colour Code...................... 1 Violet dot / 4 Yellow dots

Rear (Illustration 511 - 10)

Part Number:......... ............1J0 511 115 AA

Colour Code...................... 1 Silver dot / 3 Blue dots

The above is fitted to my car, (just checked), send me your email address, I'll scan the pages and send them to you.

somebody else with ETKA!

The correct springs for the front of a Mk1 Octy vRS hatch have 1 Violet and 4 Yellow dots and are under part number 1J0411105AJ.

Just like this one:

Looks like your car had the wrong springs on it before then, and you've fitted vRS estate springs this time!

Have a browse on vagcat, you might find out what's what with what car uses what spring. As far as find out rates, free lengths and working heights goes, i doubt you'll ever find out that much detail.

Good ole Ebay buddy

Thanks for all the info everybody.

In my defense it was late and dark by the time I finished it with help from a leadlight (no Garage), and doubt, confusion and panic had set in.

I've scrounged a torch and a mirror and nipped out to the car park to check

It looks as if more by luck than judgement (and thanks to Skospares who obviously know more about Octy springs, and can probably count paint blobs better, than me) I've ended up with a correct set.

They are actually marked 1 Pinky Purply (I'll assume that it is actually Violet, although in Bodge's piccy it still looks Pink to me) plus 4 (not 3) Yellow (not White) dots.

I can't check on the old springs as they are now in the bottom of the scrap bin, but I'm sure they only had 4 dots, 2 of which were the same "Violet" colour.

Ah well, back to worrying about what the next thing is that's going to break :S

Hi sorry for slow reply,

Just looked in ETKA, there are 16 different part numbers for your car, do you know if you have heavy duty suspension?,

or can you clean the front coils and tell me what colour dot markings you have at the moment?.

cheers
