Octavia 2.8 VR6

Featured Replies

I was just rolling thoughts around in my mind about fun things to do to an Octavia vRS if the engine ever blows up, and if you fancied trying something new!

The 2.8 VR6 engine (12v or 24v) will drop straight into the Octavia, and bolt up to the 02J front wheel drive gearbox too.

We never had any front wheel drive VR6 engined cars on the Mk4 platform in the UK, just the R32 and V6 4motion. But in the US they had front wheel drive Mk4 Golfs with the 12v 2.8 VR6 (172bhp) from 1999 to 2002, and the 24v 2.8 VR6 (201bhp) from 2002 till 2005. This proves to me that the VR6 engine will fit into a Mk1 Octy vRS. I think the VR6 even has a similar rev range to the 20vT, so you could keep using the original gearbox.

I suppose the cheap way of doing it would be to find an old Mk3 Golf VR6 and use it as a donor.

I know it's a little pointless, and I'll never do it, but just thought someone might be interested! It's going to be a heavier engine (worse handling) and it's going to drink more fuel, but you get the lovely VR6 noise and the smooth N/A power. Oh and throttles bodies become an option too!

Daydream over.....

They also had the 170bhp V5 engine in the old Seat Toledo, Golf and Bora

Do it :D

Do it, and throw a supercharger on there while you're rebuilding the thing too ;)

And LPG :D :D :D will take the pain out of filling up :D :D :D

and the LPG tank in the boot will help counter-balance the heavy lump at the front. :giggle:

Ahh, if only fuel were cheap hey!

You could just do naff all miles in it?

I get by with £20 a week at 22mpg

now just make it 4wd and there you have it - an r32 with a proper sized hatch :p

Years ago i thought about building a honda civic rallycar,i was going to buy a 3dr Vti & make it rear wheel drive,hmm.......honda vtec reving to 8500rpm & rear wheel drive......lots of fun in a muddy forest! :)

Why use a VR6 lump?

There are so many better engines to use apart from an old outdated V6!!!!

But nothing sounds the same :)

I hear what you're saying, as the future of the petrol engine is with smaller turbocharged units, for emissions and economy. I totally agree with that. I was just thinking that the 1.8T and VR6 engines are the only VAG engines that I really rate, and that fit in the A4 platform.

Like Babs says, the VR6 does sound sexy. Being a cross-breed between a straight six and a vee six, it's just a bit special.

Oh yeah, the VR6 isn't a V6, it's a VR6. If you know what I mean! A conventional 90degree V6 wouldn't fit in a transverse Golf based body I don't think. The VR (Vee-Row) engine was designed specifically to fit transversely.

I wouldn't say the VR6 is that outdated either. I mean yeah the original concept is probably just over 20 years old now, but then again the 4 cylinder turbocharged engines have been around longer than that. The 1.8 20vT must be about 15 years old now.

It would also appear that the VR6 has outlived the 20vT! Since you can buy a brand new Passat R36 today, with a 3.6 296bhp VR6 engine in it! :p

Yeah well what about the 130PD diesel tunned up?

Yeah well what about the 130PD diesel tunned up?

Errr, surely you'd just buy a PD130 Octavia to start with?

Well yeah, lol that didnt come across right, did it! lol

All im saying is there are a lot better engines out there than the VR6 lump, which is exactly what it is a lump lol

You're clearly a fail if you prefer a PD130 to a VR6

more like Epic Fail !!! :D

Might get to spend more time driving rather than filling up though :D

The candle that burns twice as bright, shines half as long :giggle:

Sorry a diesel engine in a vrs thats mad! Oh hang on...

It is mad! Absolute madness!

Alright Eldon calm down lol

That would be awesome fitting a vr6 to an octavia, but while your at it, it would be rude not to fit a supercharger to it B) and it really will sing

Yeah it would be epic!

I'm pretty sure that some countries had a special version of the leon cupra R, which had a VR6 engine and four wheel drive. Why the hell didn't we see that model here!

I think it was called a cupra R4 or something....

I'd google it myself but I'm on a ferry and browsing aint so easy on a phone!
