Had new clutch fitted

Featured Replies

Just picked my car back up from Midland VW.

£305 for replacing clutch and release bearing.

Just want to give them a thumbs up for being honest and knowing their **** about the dual mass flywheel myth that goes around.

Flywheel was perfect when inspected as have every other one they have checked when replacing clutches on 20VT gearboxes.

So don't get assuming that when your clutch goes the flywheel will need replacing.

So whats the difference between the VRS flywhell and the on on a 130PD?

As VW told me that they nearly alway replace the flywheel when they do a clutch!

Plus they said that nearly every car they have that has a clutch that has gone needs a flywheel

And my arguement is.........

If you have the clutch changed and not the fly wheel the clutch will do...... say normally 100,000 or more of normal driving!

What happens if you do the clutch when it goes and not do the flywheel is it really going to last another 100,000 before it does start to play up knowing what this DMF's are like!!!

Its a false economy! like the water pump thing when you have the cam belt done its 60 odd quid extra to save on the labour if it goes before the next time the cam belt needs doing.

So how much is a DMF? about £250 on top of you bill apposseed to having it fail after paying £400 odd for the clutch and not doing the fly wheel and then paying another £400 odd quid to have the car stripped again to have the new fly wheel put in!!!!

I know its all ifs buts and maybes but it makes sense if you think about it

And you ring most VW Skoda and Audi deallers and they will say how common it is for these DMF to fail!!

Simple answer is my car is petrol yours is diesel mate.

Diesel tourque values are far higher and thus put far more stress on the DMF

Midland VW told me that yes almost every diesel will need new DMF with the clutch but not the petrol.

Of course dealers will state new DMF with a clutch as Its for the ££££. I agreed with Midland VW that if the DMF was in anyway damadged or showing signs of wear it must be replaced and would of gone down the single flywheel route but they assured me on collection it was in perfect condition as have 99% of the other PETROL clutches they have replaced.

My best mate had 2 mk5 diesel golfs that were remapped by the company he worked for to try and cut fuel costs. One of them had 2 DMF's and the other had to have a clutch and Dmf as both cars destroyed the DMF.

So in conclusion if your using the gearbox correctly then the DMF should easily outlast 2 maybe 3 clutches. However if its diesel then it needs changing at clutch change. And if its remapped get saving NOW for when the DMF explodes.

Flwheel is difficult to check whilst on the car . Hair line cracks can signal problems that will surface later and are difficult to see. Idealy flywheel should be removed and closely checked off the car before clutch is replaced.
