ADSL modem cables

Featured Replies

Should it matter if i use a 4 core cable to replace the original 2 core modem cable? Can't find a 2 and the 4 isn't working either.

(offline for 2 weeks now )

Makes no difference iirc, it just doesn't use the other two wires.

This is assuming you mean the telephone wire with an RJ11 on each end?

That's the one. Thanks, it confirms what I thought amd tried in the first couple of days but just tried a new cable i bought as orange had me doubting what I'd tried and using an old 4 core rj11 cable from my box of spares.

Orange are clueless. Eventually they admitted there was a line fault but said it was fixed last Thur but livebox modem still won't hold an adsl connection. So box or BT wiring has problem. And seemingly neither I nor them can do much about it.

Now - not sure if you're talking dial out modem ,but if you are - on tele plug , line is on 2 & 5 , input to telephone is also on same wires ,but modem input is on outer pair ( 1 & 6, I think) .So you need to cut cable ,and cross connect wires .Most phone cables have line from tele plug on 2+5 ,as red + green ,and unused pair as yellow +black -you need to connect green & red from line to yellow +black to modem .

Sorry, ADSL.

people still on dial-up?

I have changed the topic title to relect ADSL.

I know at least 2 people who still use a traditional dialup modem to access the internet.

That was why I replied to question ,asking if user was on dial up , as dial up , uses a cross over cable - Currys /PC World charge arm and leg for these - go buy a phone lead for about £2 , cross leads ,and save approx £5 -£10
