Why a Yeti!

Featured Replies

Was just posting in the 'other' thread when it got locked!!

Well lets try and get this thread back on track again!

Why did we choose the Yeti......

Current car is an Octavia 4x4, it has impressed us so much in many ways, its 4x4 system kept us moving in the snow and overall it is just such a capable car - made us happy  drivers if you will.

For information it is rare for us to stay with the same brand of car so to stay with Skoda and buy another speaks volumes.

So reasons:

We live rurally and need 4x4 - not 'full on' go anywhere defender style, just a capable car....the Yeti seemed to fit the bill perfectly

We use the car to transport stuff...like wood, chickens, pets....stuff that won't fit in a car boot....Yeti fits the bill perfectly, in fact back seats will be down/out most of the time. But then when we want to go to the theatre with the family, seats up, clean, spruce and hey-presto a perfect family car.

My better half will drive the car mostly and likes an elevated driving position - hence the Yeti (as opposed to a 4x4 estate car) - Yeti fits the bill perfectly.

We looked around at other stuff, Freelander, Q5, Subaru's - but as soon as we saw the Yeti we knew that was the one. Perfect price point / quality / packaging in my view.

In short, because it just ticks all the boxes for the kind of small, high quality and capable 4x4 SUV I want; something that most of the other manufacturers have failed to provide. Just everything about the Yeti floats my boat. To recap;

1.) The right size, looks and proportions (many crossovers/4x4s are either too big or look like a saloon on stilts).

2.) Love the interior (this exudes a VW/Audi look and feel)

3.) Wonderful combination of fuel economy with performance (46 mpg / 0-62 in 8.6 secs)

4.) Varioflex seating provides ultimate interior flexibility.

5.) Huge range of options and accessories to give it a unique, personal look.

I agree with Harvey1512 also (and not just about our recent "issue") that the Nissan Juke should be popular. One thing I never understood was that we used to have a range of smaller funkier, 3 door SUVs available on the market then, all of a sudden, the car manufacturers decided that noone would want these and they all started producing the bigger, 5 door saloons on stilts instead. I think they made a mistake. There are plenty of people, like myself, who want an SUV for exactly that... a Go Anywhere, Do Anything Sports Utility Vehicle, not an oversized family shopping trolley.

The Yeti (albeit still a 5 door) is the first recent offering that fits this bill and it's pretty obvious that Skoda are on to a winner.

I wont repeat my reasons from the now defunct thread other than to say they mirror octy888 to quite a degree. What does seem to be a common theme with the Yeti is that people like the high driving position, and also high passenger position, and also the fact that it looks at little bit different. The new Nissan Juke is seems to be following a similar path and should be equally as popular. Other car designers please take note, the buying public like a bit of fun.

Dave - I understand your temptation but we all need to turn over the page now. Tis a new day........

Why a Yeti?

Looks.

Size.

Good consumption with the 140 diesel.

Practicallity.

Different.

Good dealers in general.

Experience from the past.

Price.

Towing ability.

Low VED rates.

Quirkiness.

Safety.

Which one?

140 diesel 4x4, because I have to get to work over poor quality cross country A roads, plus I regularly go off road in my hobby, but don't need an out-and-out big tyred off road vehicle like a Discovery/Defender. The Yeti is a "soft roader" as much as the Freelander is, but appears to have all the right "toys" to cope with fairly severe conditions, again like the Freelander. And there is the crux of the matter, as I am still trying to decide on which to go for, a new Yeti or an ex-demo Freelander? At present the balance is more towards the Yeti, but we have decided to wait 6 months or so.

(Isn't cut and paste wonderful!!)

Current car: Freelander Td4, 04 year, with 72k miles.

Dave we have to end this love in. Solid points from both you and Llanigraham.

At the end of the defunct thread someone added the question "and what have we come from" That seems a good addition to the end of each Why a Yeti so maybe we should continue this. I am coming from a Volvo S40. A fine car but I was fed up with a saloon boot and its handling in the recent snow was scary. The Yeti covers both of those points in addition to the other advantages already given.

Yep - me too. Scary Megane in the snow. Mind you I used to feel smug re-taxing it for only £35 a year. and it did 60 mpg. BUT - the Yeti promises reasonable mpg and useful 4*4 when needed - and space for my clutter, and a high seat, and a decent sound system, and it looks cute with the central pillar in colour and the others black.

lol emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Well, as I've stated much earlier on, I'm coming from an Audi TT Mk II. A beautiful car but, from April, will no longer have the kind of attributes I want and need. I will be in a much wished for position of having two additional days in the week for leisure activities such as hillwalking, mountain biking, canoeing, etc. but will be also taking a small cut in my income. It will be a little bit of a culture shock but I'm convinced that I will be enjoying my time with the Snow Monster just as much as the TT.

Dave,

Would like to see piccies of yours when it is all specced-up.

Sounds like a mini Range Rover Sport !

Not sure what colour you've gone for, but if black, when I picked mine up there was a black awaiting pickup that had the silver mirror covers on - looked very smart.

No point on mine, as steel grey.

Oh, and to keep the topic police happy - good economy (1.2), elevated driving position, ability to float over frost damaged roads were key to me.

Yes, you guessed it... it is black. I think all I'll need to do is put 20" alloys on it and get the rear windows blacked out. emoticon-0178-rock.gif Much like the Audis, the black Range Rover Sports with all the pro footballer appendages do look very nice but they have now become a victim of their own success. There are far too many about and their image has suffered.

I am half-tempted to get the rear windows blacked out, not because of "image" but so people will not be able to see an expensive mountain bike in the back.

Will post pics up when I get it (whenever that's going to be!!! emoticon-0124-worried.gif

How black do you want them? The Elegance and SE have privacy glass as standard in the back, I wonder if it will be dark enough to hide the contents of the boot area?

Has the winged arrow on the bonnet :) she's called Yeti :giggle: with 4 active paws (makes more sense to me to drive everything  ) and uses a haldex B)

What more could a motorist really ask for

TP

cut and pasted from the other thread:

Reasons I chose a Yeti 1.2SE:

1. My kids weren't car sick in it (believe me after the experience we had with a mazda6 this was the biggest selling point)

2. The seatbelts lie across a child's body correctly when they are just on a booster (in the Octavia they go across our child's neck)

3. 5 star NCAP rating with ESP (an extra though)

4. Didn't look like a people carrier - Yeti is funky

5. Good visuals and I can see where the bonnet ends (sharp contrast to Peugeot 3008)

6. It was reasonably environmentally friendly

7. I could go over all the tall speed bumps and negotiate kerbs etc with no scrapping the bottom of the car

8. I'll have the first Skoda in the school carpark

Small gripes

1. Boot space smaller depth than my Mazda 323

2. No spare tyre as do not compromise 1. further

3. Looks like a 4x4 - don't want to be a 4x4 Mum stereotype

4. Middle seatbelt garrots anyone in the middle back seat - fortunately only have 2 kids

5. No flat boot sill to sit on and sort out the kids wellies

An edited cut and paste from the locked thread of a similar name:

I followed the Yeti from the earliest days of the concept figure right through to production. I like vehicles that are perhaps a bit different from the mainstream, perhaps a bit of mini-cult status. First car was a Beetle and I've had the Mk1 GTi, smart and Fabia vRS.

Skoda is a superb brand (no pun intended) providing excellent build quality and value for money.

I like the sitting up high(ish) position provided by the soft roader style of vehicle. I loved the torque and fuel economy of my Fabia vRS so wanted another diesel and as powerful a variant as I could afford. The spec of the Elegance included many of the toys I wanted so a CR170 was the ideal 'compromise' (not much of a compromise really!). As for the 4x4 drivetrain, I bought it more for it's 'normal' road holding, just like Quattros (and I haven't been disappointed) than 'off roading'. That said it gave great comfort when driving in what were extreme conditions for the UK this winter. And all this on standard Goodyear Excellence tyres not ones from Marks and Spencer...

If you need my justification, my present aircraft project will be road trailerable when complete and you can't fit a towbar to a Fabia vRS.... emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Is it an Europa?

I think the glass is more tinted than privacy although someone who has this already may disagree. Privacy glass pretty much blacks out everything whilst what is on the Yeti just takes the edge off the sun. I'm happy to be corrected on this if anyone thinks differently.

No- sorry not good enough for that in my opinion- just like average sunglasses I would say.

Intrigued...

Europa?! Pah! Tuppaware aeroplanes. Real aeroplanes are made of metal...! emoticon-0144-nod.gif

I used to have a Van's RV-6 hooligan machine but that was getting expensive to run (AvGas is now £1.60 a litre and it burnt 40 litres per hour, granted that was cruising at !80mph..).

I'm now building an RV-12, tree-hugging green machine with wings that can be removed (intentionally emoticon-0104-surprised.gif in 5 minutes for towing home which saves on parking and hangarage). Much more wallet-friendly 15 lph (and that's Mogas - car fuel) at around 125 mph.

And yes it will be Tibetan White with some other colour stripes to match the SM when it's being towed!

And to keep it on topic, something I didn't mention in my Yeti appreciation post is I think the styling is great - not ugly at all. As has been said the way the A and C/D pillars are blacked out so they disappear and all the other clever styling cues like the dead straigh line of the top of the windows are wonderful. The headlights really do it for me though, as I've said before, I can spend hours in Ikea's lighting section - I used to be a moth...
