What Happens When?

Does anyone know what the position is regarding the introduction of DAB in relation to all radios

currently being installed.

Will an upgrade or modification be possible or will we all be faced will a large replacement bill?

Would like to hear from everyone who has any thoughts especially from either Skoda UK /dealers

Very unlikely that any existing non DAB car radio can be adapted at reasonable cost....

Saying that I have played with Pure Highway in my Octavia, works very well with strong signal, but results not really good enough from the windscreen mounted aerial, or from an optional external mag mount that I have tried....

Don't think close down of AM/FM has been firmly decided as yet - date of 2015 has been banded about though suspect if you still have current car then will have to buy new....

I still am not convinced that DAB is just around the corner, its no where near as advantageous to most people as the switch to digital TV.

Also with Digital TV there was a large uptake prior to switch where as DAB is still relativley low on most peoples agenda.

My approach to DAB (although this will be hit and miss due to signal coverage)

iPhone + 3G + Unlimited Bandwidth in your contract + AUX Input HU

Listen to whatever you want digitally through that.

I'll give it a go at least.

The fact is, DAB sucks massively. Even when it does actually work, the sound quality is shocking because of the low bitrate and 20 year old codec. It's only listenable to through a small, portable radio, it just sounds unpleasant on a semi-decent car stereo or home hi-fi. Oh, and it's one selling point was 6 music.

I honestly can't see FM going offline anytime this decade.

The outrage would make poll tax look like a small party.

I'd like a DAB radio in the car as I listen to 5Live a lot and on MW, it blows monkeys!

'Finland closed down all of its DAB services in February 2005, while in Germany, MABB stopped issuing DAB licences in January 2005 on the grounds that `outdated` technology has been superseded.' (from http://www.radiojackie.com/stuff/receptionadvice.html)

Some great quotes on that page.

I honestly feel that for mobile radio anolouge is far better with a weak signal still tolerable as opposed to stuttering as it vanishes.

I, for one would have liked the option to have had a DAB add-on (like VW do but only on the Bolero equivalent though) however it wasn't an option when I got the car.

Don't forget 5Live Nick - high bit rates aren't a priority there :giggle:. At least with a reasonable signal you'd get to listen to it after dark on DAB!
