How to replace Steering Angle Sensor

Featured Replies

Hello,

I took my furby to the local garage to get the PAS sorted as it has given up on being intermitant and just doesn't work. They were a little surprised by the apparent complexity of the system but gave it a go anyway. The guy had his VAG out and claimed to not find any errors in the logs (a little strange as the dash light is permenantly on  ) so i mentioned the help I've been given on here about the steering angle sensor.

First question: should an error code be recorded due to PAS failure?

After dissapearing down't pit for a bit he had the sensor off but couldn't 'get the back off' and as such he couldn't test it.

Second question: how could the sensor be tested?

He then traced the wires back to the pump and guessed that there must be a second sensor or signal interpreter on the pump as 'pumps aren't intelligent enough to process the signal by themselves'. He looked at the position of the pump and thinks he'll have to have the whole front of the car off to get at the pump to test it.

Third question: if the steering angle sensor can be changed in 30 - 60 mins then I guess the whole front of the car doesn't come off and there must be an easier way. Anybody care to enlighten me?

I've found another thread in here which states that the lower bumper can be removed to provide access to the pump. Is that all that's required? Or can the sensor just be unplugged from the cable and a new one fitted.

I'm gonna try and get the lower bumper off this weekend to see if it provides enough access, but any thoughts from the experts would be appreciated.

Happy motoring,

Mike

you need to remove fog lamp blank n/s then remove multiplug (the one on the right as you look at it) look underneath the car and find steering rack, look for the steering column and at the end of column there is a sensor with a wire comming out of it it's held on via two allen key bolts remove sensor trace the routing and remove wire. btw the pump removal DOESN'T require front bumper removal.

The pump also includes the ECU for the steering (address word 44 iirc)

As K says the sensor is on the rack at the base of the column (under the car) you cant open it to test it, you shouldnt need to (diag is done through the ECU, days of probing wires are now gone my friend). Skoda now have a modded sensor out.

Also if the light is on, a fault should be stored.

Cheers guys!

I'll have a look at it this weekend.

I'm a little surprised that the guy with his VAG didn't notice any error code, or infact was able to test the sensor from it. If nothing had appeared then could it be some other problem? Symptoms: PAS warning light on dash + no pump noise + no power steering.

Is the new modded sensor likely to work with my existing set up? i.e. can I replace the new for old?

I currently have a fog lamp in the fog lamp hole. I guess I just remove that to get at the pump's multiplug?

Cheers,

Mike

Is the new setting being saved? And what was the original setting and the new setting you are using?
