Size of radiator

Featured Replies

Radiator of 1.6 is wider than 1.3, but is it same in 1.6 and 1.9D -> can be swapped to to 1.3? The height of the radiator is same in every model, am I right?

I think FavoritKen is the man to speak to about that... I believe he's used the core from a 1.6 radiator which is wider.... or something. He'll know!

yes you can use the 1.3 ends on a 1.6 core or even a 1.9D core.. a 1.6 or 1.9D rad has the pipes the wrong ends (top and bottom on the left) as std but they all bolt in the same if you have the facelifted shell

You mean on the left when opening the bonnet and looking from the front of the car? So the water pump is then on the right?

yes on the gearbox side for both top and bottom pipes.

on my rally car we used a 1.6 rad with the end swapped over from another 1.6 rad to make one with 4 pipe fittings and blanked off the 2 we didn;t need, but now i just use a1.9D one as it is and thats cooling a 170 bhp vauxahll with no problem at all it maybe even too big really.

So, once again. In 1.3 there is top hose on the right (gearbox side) when looking under the bonnet:

From this direction bottom hose is on the left side as water pump is. I have now understood that in 1.6 the top hose is also on the right side (gearbox side) but so is bottom hose as well. But what about the hose from expansion tank?

If I finally have understood right, that means that when swapping there will be need to lead bottom hose from the right side to the left. 16V, what was the actual purpose to swap end, why not just using longer hose/pipe?

The idea is to improve cooling of rally Fel and use two fans. Iwould have one diesel rad available and seems that it would be suitable. I have no facelift model (1995) but I think that wider cell will fit anyway.

If fitting holes are not just in place, that is not the problem. Anyway none of original part or installation is suitable, everything has to be modified some way to believe that it is better and makes car faster

ok yes i think you have it correct. the 1.6 and 1.9D do not have the pipe from the expansion tank on the rad , it goes to the engine instead,

you could fit the 1.6 rad and extend the pipework to reach the bottom on the gearbox side and make a T piece in the bottom hose for the expansion tank, i could not do this with the vauxhall engine as the exhaust mainfold is at the front but it would be simple on the 1.3..

i would use the 1.6 rad and fan unit , no need for 2 fans dragging dowm power and weight.
