Insurance comparison sites

Insurance is due on 1st April so been searching round the comparison sites, got a nice quote of £233 from Moneysupermarket for Swiftcover, so I go to Swiftcovers site where they promptly say they do not cover modified cars - this after spending what seems an eternity of filling in forms (why do they want to know that I passed my driving test in what month in1976 - wouldn't over 10 years do?) declaring speeding tickets etc and all modifications. These sites may have their uses for stock cars but I won't bother again for modifieds.

Guess I'll stick with renewal from Chris Knott at £336

Im sure theres something on those camparison web sites that asks if the car is modified.

I know when i had a modded car, i put something in that box, and it would automatically not quote for half the insurance companies.

I don't bother with them since I got the remap. I just concentrate on companies that are mod friendly - well, as friendly as insurance companies can be.

As I said I filled in all the mod details and at the end it said only 8 companies have been able to quote - I didn't bother to check the rest but possibly they were all wrong as well. Why shouldn't they be able to handle the fact that you've modified your car? Can't be that tricky or Flux etc would struggle.

I think it's just that they - the insurance companies - don't understand what modifying is all about. If you tell someone who doesn't understand cars that you have a modified car, then they'll imagine all sort of things, including spoilers, side skirts and big stereos. A simple remap doesn't make you a dangerous driver all of a sudden. Plus, there's enough standard cars out there that they don't need the hassle or your business.

Actually its not quite true.. any mods can potentially make your car more desireable to thieves, if your car has had performance enhanced from standard your more likely to drive faster...

its all about risk.. and as said above there are companies who have policies specifically to cater for modifications.

I understand as I am using one of the specialists at the moment but I think its a good idea to check around anyway. Having filled in the forms which ask if you have a power increase, what caused it and how much it was, brake modifications, lowering and by how much - what more info can you give them? They ought to know if they do not cover power increases and refuse to quote in the first place as did most companies.

i've given up with ins co's - few years ago I got my current car ,unmodded 1.4Tdi Furby - and asked for cover - gave them VRN ,YEAR ,MODEL -to be asked -"has it got ABS ,is it fitted with an immobiliser" - FFS - standard manufacturers data should tell them that .Or is that TOO much to ask .Nowadays at renewal time ,I go on line ,check prices ,usually finding that my present company's on line quote is cheaper than my renewal .So off to present company to ask why -usually it "that's for new customers " -my reply -"OK -I'll go be a new customer elsewhere " - usually getting the online price - as a TV ad said - "HAGGLE " -they're professionals ,they expect to be insulted - and you might just get a decent quote .

Haggling is my job for today :smirk: Just after getting the heating fixed in here - its cold :(
