Rear tyres wearing on outside edge

Featured Replies

Hi folks, Ive had the Whiteline ARB fitted for a while now, and have noticed the rear tyres are wearing more on the outside edge! Is it possible the ARB couldve altered the tracking/toe/etc?

It's unlikely that it could have changed the camber or toe at the back. OTOH front outside edge wear can also be a sign of hard cornering and understeer, so does the car oversteer (not tailslide, actual oversteer, where you're applying less same sense as the corner lock)?

sounds like the rear beam could be bent this happens when people jack on the beam and it bends thus causing wear to the outer edges of the tyre would you agree ken??

Since fitting the ARB the car seems quite neutral now in that it slides evenly rather than understeering when pressing on.

I did think about this one, however the original tyres that were fitted looked fine when they came off the back & it has never been jacked up on the beam.

Any other thoughts guys? I think Ill get the alignment checked.

My guess is just wear from cornering hard now you have an ARB fitted.

Mine wears the outside edges of the front tyres on track days etc but a mate with a VRS with an ARB fitted brought it over the other week and his rear tyres were worn as much as his front ones so I suppose it's just hard cornering.

With the ARB fitted, the back end of the car is being dragged sideways (and so are the tyres) in every corner rather than flexing into the corner.

I think it's most likely a result of the different handling, but there's no point in getting anything less than a full alignment check done, because if there is a geometric effect it's changed the rear geometry (or that's where the damaged parts are). And yes, jacking under the rear beam which bends it would bend the rear stub axles to a more positive camber angle.

Or have the front tyres been placed on the rear at some point giving the same effect, as the front tend to wear on the outside.

Nope, the backs have been on the back since new :) Admittedly theyre 20k old on the back but the inner still has a good 4-5mm or so of tread.
