What suspension?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to get some idea of what people use to uprate their suspension.

I already plan to run an uprated arb and poly bushes but can't find a lot of choice when it cones to damper/spring combos or coilovers.

The car is a 2004 vrs hatch and I've seen cheap springs from the likes if Jamex and lo. I've also seen coilovers for between 250-400 but no real reputable makes. Can anyone recommend a decent set up for lowering about 35 rear, 25 front which will stiffen up the ride by about 30-40%

i have a r32 front roll bar on mine and whitec coil overs on mine and it feels really tight and you can adjust your ride hight

Cheers, just googled them (weitec) and they loom like s good starting point. How much harder are they than the standard set up?

You have 2 choices for a little more than your budget.

Weitec coilovers for around £460 or Koni FSD shocks/H&R springs £600 ish.

Not sure you really want to go that low on front and rear as your ride will be hard. The only way you will get that low is to go for coilovers.

Most folks on here including me if they have coilovers are fitted with Weitec Hicon GT's. These are a very good make and reasonable price. There are other makes like KW Coilovers which are top of the bunch but more money for around the same kind of handling and set up( Weitec and KW are made in the same factory in Germany)

In terms of ride, coilovers are much more firmer than normal shock spring combination, although I would not say uncomfortable just firm and precise. As you can adjust the ride height by adjusting the platforms you have option to keep standard ride height for more comfort of go low for a reduction in comfort but tighter handling

Do not go for cheap suspension on the VRS, you will regret it, the VRS is a fussy car for suspension not like the GOLF which has much more choice. The weight of the VRS is what makes the suspension set up different to the platform of the golfs.

I do know of a few folks with SPAX coilovers and H&R coilovers to that state they are a good brand also

hope this helps

Shame nowhere is doing the Weitecs for £390 like they were last year... I missed the boat on that one :'(

Thanks Sarah I'll give him a try!

As mentioned the Weitec coilovers are a really good choice but if you didn't want to spend as much the AP's, made by the same family as Weitec, are also a great option and very similar in terms of ride quality and handling.

Hi Damian have you any feedback on the AP's fitted to the VRS.

I know they are built in same factory (although different section) as the Weitec and KW but heard somewhere that they have slightly inferior internals. May not be true as the only difference bewteen KW and Weitec is the external casing which on the Weitecs is not corrosion proof and zinc coated which is the cause of price difference.

I also saw some issue if users of AP coilovers lower the VRS over 25mm on them, the rebound causes a problem in the shock and the handling is impaired. This does not seem to be the case with the Weitecs and KW's.

interested to know more...

Cheers Mark.

Hi

We have had some feed back from AP`s on the Octy vRS and they are not that good

So we reccomend the Weitec`s

Thanks Sarah, yep I kind of thought that was the case...

Yeah they're basically the entry level kits from KW and as the price suggests not as good quality as the likes of the Weitec.

Don't get me wrong the AP's are still a great choice but if you can push to the Weitec's it would be my personal choice.

We have a few members running the Weitec's on the VRS with nothing but positive feedback.

I got Super-Pro Polybushes and Weitec Coilovers from Jabba Sport on mine now. They have tightened everything up and greatly reduced body roll when wanging it round round-a-bouts. Does the job without costing the earth. £650 plus labour....

Another vote for the Weitec Hicon GT`s here too. Had them fitted at Awesome GTi over 12 months ago, they are harder than the OE setup, but as said previously, not uncomfortable, superb ride/handling combination for the money, 100% recommended. Better still with the Whiteline RARB which is also on mine.
