MFD3 Update being investigated

The phrase "whistling in the wind" springs to mind emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Like a terrier around a postmans legs :giggle:

I also asked them to include speed camera locations with warnings  , and built in bluetooth on any future models :

Your glass is never half empty is it? There's optimism and then there's Skippy with his MFD3 :)

Could just buy a Pioneer AVIC unit and put up with the slightly less than OE looks. I get Parrot Bluetooth, iPhone support, 7 digit postcodes and 1 year of free speed camera updates included in the box ! Oh and the iPod lead was only £20 and not the £150 odd quid that Skoda charge for their MDI or whatever it's called ! But I guess if you want to live in hope that Skoda will add all this functionality to the MFD3 I guess that is up to you all !

The thing is, no matter how inferior the MFD3 is to Tom Tom etc, I will always use it.

Because it's built in.

I don't have wires and cables trailing anywhere.

I don't need to attach it to the cigarette lighter for power.

It is always there and always ready to go.

It does what it needs to do, it has never failed to get me anywhere and has features such as lane control etc.

To me, tidyness always wins.

I don't have any wires or untidy cigarette lighter sockets on my Garmin 1690T :) It's hardwired and the cable is virtually invisible, it has live traffic services steering me around jams, connected to my Parrot so voice directions are passed out over the MFD1 without the need to hook it up to an FM channel, and it has Google local search, Eco Route and it's own spirit monitor type application built in. Add to that, it's in my line of site, and I can pop it in my pocket so nobody wants to try and steal it, I can use it in Hire Cars, and the wifes car and on my Triumph Tiger :)

I had my locks drilled out on the Mk2 Octy vRS in Nottingham City Council car park a few years ago, and they went for the MFD2.

That said though, the MFD3 is lovely as a Multifunction Head Unit and I would have one in a heartbeat..... if I could :) It is a shame however that they can't match the navigation functionality of a PND

Is it only non-MFD3 owners who think portable satnav devices are better emoticon-0144-nod.gif

No, my dad still carries a TomTom round in his Merc with built in SatNav :)

Brimma what do you mean by rubbish?I NEED safety cams too which is why I use an Origin B2 - we're not going to have some nonsense over "well if you don't speed you shouldn't need one" are we?!!

The only reason you need them is because you break the law - QED

OK - well I'll say it in as many words then. Why could you possibly NEED safety cams?I mean, I'm 36, been driving since 3 months after my 17th birthday and so far I have 0 points on my license - ever.So me, probably pretty average intelligence (I don't know, refuse to blow my own trumpet on that) have managed to stay point free for 18yrs - I'm sure you could do it if you really tried.Or do you need somebody to tell you when not to drive off a cliff, in front of a moving train, etc?

wardth - I have nothing to add

Nope, they simply are better at navigation, take your MFD3 into the next hire car you have abroad :)

I don't need the SD Card / MP3 functionality as I have a stealth install for my iPhone and 32GB of Music at my disposal through my lowly MFD 1, with full operation through the multifunction steering wheel.

The MFD is a beautiful piece of equipment, but it can't do live traffic, TMC is a poor substitute, you can't use it as a hands free device without another big wedge throwing at it, you can't move it between 2 cars and a motorbike, and by the looks of things, the updates are coming through thick and fast ......... (Thats sarcasm btw)

I would be happy with an MFD3 if I bought a used car and it was already fitted, but it's not worth the list price as an option and still pretty expensive as a bolt on from ebay. I really do like the MFD3 by the way, but I accept that it's compromised in it's navigation capabilities when comapred to a high end PND.

I use a speed camera warning whenever I do long journeys.

Why? Well last year I got done for speeding near Bristol, 38mph in a 30mph limit. The camera was visible and I drove past and was astonished it has flashed as I was sure the limit was 40mph, so I turned around and drove back up to have a look. Turned out that shortley after the limit went from NSL to 40 it went to 30. The signs were in good condition but I had not spotted them. Don't know why, maybe I was checking the mirror or a vehcile coming the other way. There was no sign why the road should be a 30mph, no street lights or houses, however around the corner it transpires was a village.

I got the option of a speed awareness course and took it and bought a camera detector.

Driving through average speed limits is a doddle as it beebs every time you exceed 50.

Now on the law breaking side I get very annoyed following numpties who feel 40 on a clear NSL road is fine. Hence I tned to overtake a lot and having 300bhp to boot I like to overtake in the shortest distance, so I put the foot down get past and back in. Very handy at this point to know there are no cameras in view.

I've got every sympathy with you Simon, but my comments above refer to the use of the word NEED.

You've hit the nail on the head with your situation - you thought it was a 40 limit, but for some reason missed seeing the 30 sign.

I think there's a risk that relying on camera warnings will potentially make people more complacent, and in turn less observant on the road.

People will no doubt brand me as being a member of the 'righteous brigade', but at the end of the day, if you ain't breaking the law, you won't need to worry. If you need a camera warning device to slow you down to the speed limit, you're obviously going faster than you should be, or not paying sufficient interest to the road ahead.

Awaits the public stoning :S

I know its a skoda forum, but interesting reading this tbh as your not alone, we have discussed the very shortcomings of the RNS over on audisport many times, the plus for the unit is the oem fitment & integration which cant be beaten, but the neg is the location entry system is just too long winded imho, but hey we're talking of a unit thats now what 6 years plus old & they've only just updated it with I wouldnt say a much better version, maybe the new 2012 A3 will get a hell of an upgrade, not gonna hold my breath as I find audi lacks behind the other brands in the VAG stable to a degree.

Oh I did forget, the other neg is the price, think is about 2k for the unit from audi, justify that & no wonder we go elsewhere for them, urmmm ebay is our friend unfortunately.

Well I'm gonna add my two pennies worth to this before I have to get up and do the washing up :dull: I really like my Nexus system (MFD2). Granted it's by no means the best sat nav in the world and there is no way I'd have bought one for £1500! But I have had a torrid time with Tomtom's (had a few and they've all broken unexplainably!) and although I used a Garmin at work last night for the first time and found the navigation pretty good I didn't like its operating system. I do like that my nav is build into my car as it looks neat and tidy and it's always there - SWMBO doesn't drive and I wouldn't get on bike if you paid me! lol. At the end of the day personal choice is going to win every time.

Best of luck trying to get the MFD3 update - I agree that factory nav really should be able to support the 7-digit postcode search!
