How to change from KMPH to MPH on Digital Display?

Featured Replies

I have a 1.8 tsi which does not have maxi dot. I've noticed that when i'm driving the bottom display shows KMPH. Does anyone have an idea of how this can be changed to read MPH on the digital display, as KMPH is not much use on British Roads? Thanks...

Simple answer? You can't

It's only there so that the car is legal for EU - because the actual speedometer only has MPH on it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that makes sense. However, I suppose it would be nice to have this option to see your speed exactly...

The kph speed is as exact/correct as the mph. About 3mph fast at 70mph in my case. My GPS based Road Angel is the one I trust.

I agree, digital speedo would be lovely :D

Though speedos are always out. I have to get to 74 to actually travelling at 70

There is a way of changing the digtial display to MPH from KMH, there has previously been a thread on this site about changing it, it's not in the hand book, but it can be done.

In my swedish Octy I can select between Odometer or MPH.

All I have to do is (if I remember correctly): turn to the left the small plastic button in the dashboard. Something in the central squared screen will blink (this is the selected item I can change now), I keep on pressing to the left the small plastic thing until the MPH blinks, then click it as in the mouse button and it changes between the MPH and the Odometer.

BTW I don´t have maxidot. :-(

I hope this helps.

I don't believe this is possible on UK cars - as has been said before, under EU law we must have both MPH and KPH displayed, and as there is no KPH on the dial then it's displayed on the digital display and can't be changed.

Those that are changing it have non-UK cars.

Found the post I was refering to, which was posted on 22 May 2009 and headed Maxi-Dot Speedo….Can I change it?.....

Having read through this again I am not sure if it will or won't work on the later models.

Below is the link and a section from this posting, it appears there may be some hidden configuration / settings accessed via the climatronic computer.

Dual zone Climatronic settings

Like the previous version there are a ton of settings and information hidden in the climatronic computer.

To get this, press the ECON and the top right air direction button (next to recirc) simultaneously. To get back to temperature control press AUTO and ECON simultaneously

The passenger side temp control dial sets the section (1-30)

The fan speed dial sets the subsection and is shown in the passenger side LCD screen to the right of the main number.

The one that everyone wants is true speed, whis can be found in section 19.

Subsection 0 shows Kmh, subsection 1 shows Mph.

Subsection 3 shows the revs to the nearest 100 (tickover is about 870rpm and shows up as 08 on the display)

And I was right ... there was a19 in it somewhere!

The above pasted from the Octavia Tricks section, so not my original work. I have to assume it works 'cos it's been there a long time and no-one seems to have argued with it!

Edit: OK, just been out to the car and tried it and, yes, it does work, but not quite in the way I was expecting.

I was somehow expecting that the speed readout would be displayed on the Maxidot, but it is displayed on the driver's side temperature indicator on the climatronic.

A couple of comments:

i) Where the text above says: 'To get back to temp control ...' this means effectively: 'If you no longer want to see the true speed indicated'. I had thought that you needed to 'go back' in order to save your changes, but you don't - just follow the instructions and the driver side temperature display will immediately start showing speed.

ii) When you turn off the ignition the Climatronic defaults back to normal temp display, but, if you hold down the two buttons again, you're straight back to road speed indication ie you don't have to redial in the 19 and 1, which you will immediately see re-displayed in the passenger side temperature display

iii) The road speed indicated this way is somewhat lower than the speedo indicates. Eg it was showing 47 when the speedo was showing 50. I'm assuming therefore that the climatronic display is the accurate reading since speedos tend to err on the high rather than the low side. But where is the climatronic getting its info from?

That climatronic "method" i used my in Ibiza, but at the time (circa 2006) nobody knew what counter number did what.

Pretty funky though

Antrich1968,

Interesting post about settings and hidden info in climatronic computer.

Grateful if you could help re :-

Where is the "Octavia Tricks" section (I've tried the basic search facility)?

I've looked at climatronic overview shown in fig 141 (page 116) of my Octavia owner's manual page but cannot see ECON - am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks

When I first read this thread earlier in the week I realised I had seen something about setting the KMP to MPH in another posting I had read last August, which was the posting I had seen from 2009. I had not tried it myself until today, and I can not see Econ or work out what it meant, this may not be relevant to the later models, if you look through all the comments in the may 2009 posting it appears it may only be relevant on certain models. So perhaps this will not work on our vehicles. But no doubt there is a way to do it, maybe VAGCOM, but no doubt it would need to be changed back to KPH before going abroad.

The UK dashpods have different software and the changing of the KMH display is disabled in this software, as has been mentioned in several posts already it is an EU requirement that UK speedos show both MPH and KMH. As the main speedo only shows MPH then KMH must be displayed elsewhere, and in this case its the central display. There have been quiet a few threads on this subject already, and in each nobody has yet found a way to alter the display on UK FL Octys and the Superb2 which is the same.

Buy an Australian or NZ spec control unit. You will get a kph speedo with the option of kph or mph in the Maxidot. :giggle:

I know its a daft question, but can anyone tell me one good reason why the UK speeodometers are not marked in MPH & KPH

other than the cost of the paint for the letters.

Surly there must be an overall saving for all markets to have the speedometers similarly marked.

Or as I say - what am I missing?
