Cruise control retrofit

Featured Replies

We are in the process of converting from a non Skoda (BMW 320d & Renault clio) household into a 2 Octavia household (2008 elegance hatchback and 2010 vRS combi) so I have recently been monitoring and joined the forums here :)

My wifes car has been the first one to arrive. It's a 2008 elegance hatchback. There is one modification she wants however - cruise control. I understand that on this car (there is a trip computer) all that is needed is a stalk change and some computer work.

I can track down a specialist or even try my hand at getting the dealer to do the coding part for a decent price (he's still being nice to me as I'm still waiting on the vRS ;)) so I'm not too worried about that end of it. I will tackle the fitting of the stalk myself as I've often fitted phone kits and done most of the servicing etc. myself on various cars over the years.

What I'm wondering is where to get the best deal on the stalk itself? I've found this one on fleabay - is this good value for it? Can anyone suggest any alternative suppliers?

I'm also going to give Traynors in Armagh (I'm in Dublin btw) a shout to see if they've got one but I'm not sure if theres a specific one I'm after or if the same part is contained in any other vag cars?

That looks expensive. You can get the official Skoda part here for £66.41 inc VAT:

I'm guessing it will be the same price from any dealer spares dept.

Thanks, that confirms my first suspicion that the price is a little on the high side.

That site (theskodashop.co.uk) had them on offer at 10% off not so long ago, and they are just an online outlet for the UK dealership Dennis Horton & Son Ltd.

Oh, I meant to add, I've also seen them on ebay a lot cheaper - more like £30-40, often as the VW or Audi part (which of course is all the same). But then you do need to make sure you're buying the correct part for your car.

Well if anyone knows the equivalent VW or Audi part numbers then I'd be grateful.

Unfortunately they don't deliver to Ireland which brings me back to the bloody dear one :(

Have you asked your local dealer for a quote? As you have the part number from above, I assume they would be able to supply the part?

What made us swap...

Well the missus was in need of a new car as her clio is almost ten years old and has almost 110K on the clock. She is doing 50 miles a day commuting and often goes down to her parents at the weekend as her dad is unwell which adds a round trip of about 320 miles so she wanted something bigger, more comfortable and more economical to run.

As for me I'm swapping the BMW for practicality reasons mainly. I have started to do quite a bit of kayaking and transporting the gear is not the easiest in the current car. The seats don't fold down and the saloon boot is awkward to get stuff in/out of (not to mention smallish given the large rear wheel arches). I do 60 miles a day commuting and also regularly do >300 miles at the weekend.

It was a good idea to swap both at the same time as we could hammer out a better deal ;). We looked at various machines but ended up settling on Octavias. She wasn't so worried about performance but wanted a 105bhp ambiente at least. I had originally looked at the 140bhp elegance combi brand new but then the vRS combi option came up - it's not brand new but only run in so I've gone for that as it means basically no performance drop from the m sport :). Basically the value for money coupled with getting a decent car with relatively low maintenance costs swung it for us.
