change from variable to fixed service interval?

Featured Replies

Hi -- Ive searched the forum but have not been able to find an answer -- can someone please help?

I have a 2006 Octavia 1.9 diesel estate with BKC engine that I bought about 6 months ago from a Skoda dealer near Cambridge. Its now on 79000miles

The last service in the logbook was May 09 at 74000miles

It has the following option codes:

QG1 = Service interval prolongation -- variable service interval

0GG = Emission standard EU4 -- (7GG indicates that there is a particle filter - page 33of the owner's manual) so Im assuming 0GG means that it doesnt have one.

so it appears that its on the variable service interval -- from what Ive read, I should probably change to the fixed. The car is only used 4 or 5 times a week -- maybe for 30min trips to work. Then occasionally going away on holiday where it may do 10 hours on the motorway (we live in France). I think its unlikely that well do more than 10000 per year and it certainly isnt used daily. Its often doing hilly work and its cold in the winter -- we live at 550m in the Pyrenees.

My question is -- what do I need to do to change to fixed service interval if anything? Can I just do an oil change every 12months using fixed service interval oil: VW 507 01 (page 250 owners manual) instead of the (presumably more expensive, oil for the variable service interval VW 506.1) And then manually resetting the service interval display ?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

cheers,

pat

I would just leave on variable as a 30min trip will fully warm the engine up - it is journies that don't fully warm up the engine is where the problems lie. VW 507 is the spec of oil you need for longlife service.

thanks jrw -- from what I read elsewhere on this forum, it seemed that if you dont fulfill _all_ the criteria for variable service interval, you should probably be on fixed? The "variable servicing and long-life oil" booklet talks about "daily mileage above approx 25", "vehicle used regularly" and I think elsewhere I saw over 10,000miles/year -- I think I'll probably be under 10000miles/year and its not used daily.

From the owners manual, I read that (because I dont have the diesel particle filter, i should be on VW 507 01 for fixed or VW 506 01 for varaible. though I think I can also use VW 507 00 for variable even if I dont have the DPF.

pat

I use 507 00 oil in my car. I have variable servicing and no DPF

Though, I am looking again to average 28,000 per annum in miles, mix of driving, car used daily, so variable makes sense for me :)

Exactly that. Wait till a fixed service would be due and then drop the oil and reset the display.

From the manual (page 16):

Display regarding the distance and days until the following service

interval

You can have the distance still to be driven and the days until the following

service interval displayed at any time as follows:

• Switch on the ignition and press the reset button ⇒ page 13, fig. 2

for more than 2 seconds.

A key symbol ï¤ is displayed on the display of the counter for the

distance driven. The remaining distance to be driven will be indicated for

10 seconds next to the key symbol and then the remaining number of days

to the due date for the service inspection.

Resetting Service Interval Display

We recommend having this resetting performed by a specialist garage.

Specialist garage:

• resets the memory of the display after the appropriate inspection

• makes an entry in the Service schedule

• affix the sticker with the entry of the following service interval to the

side of the dash panel on the driver's side.

The service interval displays can also be reset as follows by using the

reset button ⇒ page 13, fig. 2 on the trip counter:

• Switch off the ignition, press the reset button of the trip counter for

distance driven and hold it down.

• Switch the ignition on and release the reset button. Now turn the reset

button to the right. The service interval displays are reset."

One thought - (I am thinking this myself)

Fixed servicing is a full inspection every year,

extended is full inspection every two years and an oil change inbetween,

variable is a full inspection at up to two year intervals.

I am thinking of leaving my car on variable, i.e., a full garage service every two years with a stamp in the service book but changing the oil myself every year. Peace of mind and a FSH (warranty will have expired by the time I leave a spanner on it)

hi all, after a bit (actually a lot more reading) It seems to me that a VW 504.00 / 507.00 oil is not really significantly more expensive than one for a fixed service interval. So I might as well do an annual change with that oil just for piece of mind. Here in France you can get VAG 504.00 / 507.00 oil from a shop like Halfords "Feu Vert" for a pretty good price.

http://www.feuvert.fr/huile-moteur-voiture/feu-vert-lubrifiant-feu-vert-vag-504-00-507-00-100-synthese-5l/p42725.html

According to a french forum, its made for "Feu Vert" by Motul.

Thanks for your input and all the valuable information on the briskoda forum!

cheers,

pat
