Oil for a 110tdi

Featured Replies

MY 110tdi octavia with 110k miles was set to variable servicing (although the intervals seem to have been about 10k miles for most of its life). My question is, if switching to fixed from variable, what oil should I use? Fully synthetic as I assume the variable oil is? IIRC, switching from semi to fully synth can loosen carbon deposits in the engine . . . . that's my main concern, although to be honest I don't know if the variable oil for the 110tdi is the same as the PD variable oil.

My other question is (and forgive this obvious one as it's been a while since I serviced a VAG car), is there a simple copper compression washer on the sump plug, or does it come as a unit with a new plug?

Cheers. :)

Mine has a *very* compressed washer on the sump bolt ;)

I believe the specs for PD LL oil is fractionally higher than that of the non PD-vag engine. I have always used fuchs oil from Opie Oils for mine.

So would using fully synthetic oil to VW 506 00 be the correct one? It is the variable oil, but I don't see why it couldn't be used on fixed intervals . . . ? Or would it be better to switch to the 505 00 oil designed for fixed intervals?

I want to drop the oil this weekend so it'll be whatever I can obtain locally (either unipart or halfords . . . I used to use the halfords fully synth in my PD100 fabia).

Cheers. :)

As the LL oil is somewhat more expensive that normal fixed service interval oil, I would use oil designed for fixed instead.

When on variable I used this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-975-fuchs-titan-gt1-longlife-iii-5w-30-premium-synthetic-meeting-vw50400-vw50700.aspx

tbh: I am not sure on what the VW specs are for non-LL oil in the 110TDi! Guess you could visit Halfords and have a look at their chart, and then go some where else to get the oil at a decent price :-)

You can use 505.01 , 506.01 or 507 VAG spec oil . 506.01 is long life and 507 is long life with Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Check the actual spec number on the container . If it hasn't got the number it not the correct oil ! ASDA are doing a special 507 spec oil for £32 . I forget whether it was for 4L or 5L.

The earlier Diesel engine sump plugs had the copper washers ( should be replaced each oil change ) . The later PD type diesels use a sump plug with the captive washer which can be re-used indefinitely. I think the change was as a result of the change in sump material from steel to aluminium alloy . The main seal for the steel sumps was the copper washer , the main seal for the alloy sumps is the soft aluminum alloy threads. This means that the plug threads ( and sump threads) for use in the alloy sumps must be in good condition ( without any thread damage of burrs) to effect the seal. If in doubt about the plug ,replace it (only about £1 from GSF).

Ended up using Castrol Edge 0w-30 (as per 506 00 spec for non PD engines). Not cheap though and the engine has swallowed all 4 litres of it! :o I have some 4 year old Castrol Edge 5w-30 in the garage - I wonder if that's OK to top it up with?

Ive always used the Halfords fully synthetic in mine, seems a very good oil for the price.

PD oil, VAG spec 505.01 is the best as it's fully synth and slightly lighter grade. However many semi 10-40 turbo diesel oils will meet spec and do the job, the 110 is a VEP motor and doesn't have the delicate top end the PD motors have.

As for the washer, you do NOT replace it. The sump plug is one time only, you must replace the plug with a new one and torque it to 30nm. We do about 1 sump every 2 weeks from stripped threads principally because the sump plugs have not been replaced each time/over torqued.

Yep, I did replace the plug too - came as one part with the washer attached. :) The oil is Castrol Edge 0w-30, which is fully synth and meets the 505.00 spec that the handbook suggests for fixed intervals.
