Correct axle stand locations?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to check to see what people's thoughts are on these locations for axle stands. I've used the back of the wishbone, with a block of oak bridging the load across the bolt head and the actual wishbone itself.

I'd appreciate a fairly quick response please as I'm hoping to crack on with the car. :)

Looks good but your jack looks dodgy. If it's on the part of the chassis which is lower that the body you can damage them if you have a narrow headed jack.

Sorry I don't quite follow you when you say it could damage them? :S

They are only thin metal and with the smaller jack heads the raised parts can press into the channel. Don't know about tdi but on a Vrs they carry the plastic fuel pipes.

Ah yes, I have a 5" square block of wood on the top of the jack head to spread the load. :)

Looks fine :)

Cheers. :) Didn't fall down on me in the end! I've not really used axle stands before so it was just a bit of a confidence thing before I dragged myself under the car, but it seemed very solid though.

That is where I stick my stands, or on the bolt in just to the right. All depends on where i can get the jack too. My car has happily run at 60mph on stands :-)

I was going to make myself some wood ramps for when I had quick jobs like an oil change to do on the car, as I figured I probably spend more time jacking the car up and getting the stands in there, than I do actually doing the job in hand. Takes for ever and a month to take off the under-engine tray!

Yeah, that's what I used to do. I had two hefty bits of wood, about 1.5" thick, which I drove the car up onto. It gave just enough clearance to do the oil changes on my other cars. This one is sitting a touch too low to comfortably do the job though, hence the stands. :)

On the Octavia (standard susp), I sometimes find it hard to even get the jack under the car!

When I am at my parents I use a collection of scaffolding planks, as they don't sink into the ground so easily! I was planning on making 4 ramps, 2 long, and 2 shorter, so I could drive the car up onto and have it nice and level. Or I have seen those rather cool air bags some mobile tyre fitters use to lift the car up... they could be rather cool - and give suitable excuse for buying a compressor too :-)

I wouldn't want to crawl under the car if it was supported on air bags! I think I'll stick with the ramps now tbh, it gives plenty of space for moving about under the car too.
