Clutch gone to floor

Featured Replies

Aaaargh.... I'm stuck in Essex with only an iPhone for net access so sorry for bad spelling etc.

This morning at 4 am on the M4 I had to stop and pull onto the hard shoulder to let an ambulance pass. I had to restart the car, when I did the clutch was on the floor. Felt as if first few inches of travel were floppy then last bit was spongy. Couldn't get out of 5 th gear. When I gave it a yank into neutral then it didn't want to go in another gear. Managed to get up to 5th with a few block changes then managed to stay in 5th till I got onto the m25 and around London. On the slip road to the a127 got it into 3 re then the clutch completely went. It now sits on the floor. Stalled trying to get it onto grandparents drive. Had to push it on. Car is new to me so I'm wondering if I've bought a dog :o( 69k miles 1.9 tdi on a 56 plate. I read aboud flaccid clutch on the octavia I forums but

my searching ability is limited as

I've only got my phone here to view the net. Any advice, in a part of Essex where there isn't a skoda dealer for miles so if anyone can tell me what pArt I'd need or diagnose the problem have a friendly mechanic who will sort.

Thanks in advance briskodians. I'm in a bit of a pickle!

Is there any brake fluid leaking out from the bell housing? If so it will be the slave cylinder thats let go.

Can't see any. Is there same cylinder etc as mk1? Seemed like there were some. Common faults on that.

Im not sure if there the same as the mk1 octy, but I personally wouldn't narrow it down to one particular brand of car. A fault like so can develop any time IMO.

I had a brand new Sachs slave cylinder for a 1.8 mk4 astra, was all bled through properly. As soon as the clutch was depressed the slave cylinder went pop and brake fluid dripped out. (Luckily the gearbox was still sat on stands away from the bell housing).

I also had an issue with the slave cylinder on a 2.0T astra coupe, where if it was left in gear with the clutch depressed long enough. The clutch started creeping and the car would start pulling against the handbrake. The only option was to turn the car off and relase the clutch pedal, and restart and proceed.

I was looking at a ford focus 1.6 petrol with a friend yesterday at a workshop. Various methods of bleeding the clutch (even until the fluid was coming through clear) and the clutch was still dropping to the floor.

We suspected the slave or master cylinder could be playing up, but there was a lack of fluid from the slave cylinder.

Or a pipe could be leaking somewhere causing an issue.

This sounds like a problem that's been covered on here before. I had the same thing happen to my last Golf, pulled the pedal up off the floor and it worked for a bit, then failed again. Went to the dealer and they fitted a new clutch master cylinder under warranty, which took less than an hour, while I waited and drank their coffee.
