Audi S6, would I be crazy...

Featured Replies

Hello,

Yes yes, I already have a thread running on should I get rid of my Octy VRS for an ST220, but just doing some more research caus I'm not sure if the ST is gunna be quick enough and have stumbled across this:

Is it just too old and expensive to run? It will fall below the pre 2001 tax rules

I still love the ST, I am worried about the tax for that tho as the V6 lump may shoot it up to £435 next year :(

S6, will it hold it's value better....I'm just about to do and insurance quote...they are pretty rare, this has to be the best one I've found online!

Any more input, if I don't get it then I bet one of you guys are tempted lol!

Do it Do it. The only thing that you'll regret when you have it is the fuel bill.

What were they 4.0 V8 or something?

RFL won't kill you but petrol cost might!

Do it!

4.2ltr v8 with either 340 or 360 bhp spec (earlier were 340).

An amazing car, more of a cross continent cruiser than a comparison to the vrs as despite being quattro the audi will be heavier in the twisties.

Get an lpg conversion and the fuel bill will not scare you anymore!!!

A lot more refined than the vrs and in another league in the luxury/comfort point of view.

They WILL cost on repairs and parts if they do go wrong, as are more specialist if you cant work on it yourself and things like cambelts can make you wanna cry, mine cost £850 to do!

It does say the cambelt has just been done, that rear end is nice to look at, with the twin exit exhaust and a GENUINE "S" badge! I mean a £47,000 brand new car, 10 years later and can be had for probably £8500 after some haggling.... ;)

However, I know what you mean about the fuel costs, 19mpg average so will be more than that I suppose...that is thirsty :giggle: Having looked on Parkers, the 0-60 is not amazing, 6.6secs but I suppose that is not the main point of this car...? 1800+kg is quite alot of car to launch off, hmmmm, this is a tough one!

An ST220 estate for £1k less, 5 years newer and a bit more sensible, only half a second slower and better mpg, get the awesome S6 but like you said, expensive to maintain

If you are going to change then Audi class and driving experience has got to beat the Dagenham Donkey all day long. Def worth the extra running costs which will be returned in smiles per mile

Have you done it yet?

Still maintain that the S4 with the 2.7 and LPG is the way to go :p

Have attempted insurance with Direct Line, Tesco and Elephant - All have rejected...

I am 26 with 9 years NCB and no points or claims, ah well...their loss!

I'm sure I could get insurance with someone but if none of those three will then it's probably gunna be £1500k + right?

Oh well, nice dream while it lasted, looks like it's back to the ST220 or keeping mine...any more suggestions...?!

TBH tho that is a darn nice S6 if anyone else happens to be looking or tempted.. :p

Hmmm, nice cars but I think they are just a bit too old and high mileage...

If you are worried about the tax and V6 lump in the ST you still have those issues with Audi surely.

Of the choices you are making the S4 would be a much better car or even a A4 Sline 1.8Turbo Avant, so you have same engine as VRS but better handling and chassis and something different.

Based on your age and insurance the bi turbo Audi's will probably be out your reach.

I ran an S6 for a while. As has been said 18mpg, expensive parts, cambelts, you name it it will be dear.

But they sound great and go like stink. If you can afford to run it then go for it.

Have you done it yet?

At 23, with 3 years NCB I managed to get a quote for an RS6 (same vintage, 4.2 V8 twin-turbo) for £1800, using Tesco Compare!

I never liked that place anyway! :giggle:

girl I work with has a W reg S4 Avant, she's 26. But lives in the back of beyond so I guess less risk from thieves. I think she bought it for £7000 and insured it for under £1000

I did it (S4) and regretted it after a few months. Putting in £100 per week in unleaded soon stops being funny.

If you can afford to run one comfortably then maybe consider a more recent, fuel efficent car. I wish I had done!

Try some proper insurance brokers like Adrian Flux or Chris Knott etc. All the ones you listed are mainstream companies for shopping cars!

The S6 is epic and I'd get one if I had the cash! But you're not allowed one, because you're younger than me, and that's not fair!

If I was in the market for a new car I'd definately go for something pre 2001 to avoid all this tax crap. The vRS will be costing £235 this year! It's insane. What do I get for my money? A million miles of endless roadworks on the M1 horray!

Tax is a joke, they just make up some inflated price and we all pay up like mugs.

I might have to get something old enough to be tax exempt, then put an 8litre V8 in it just to annoy everyone!

In theory if you were to buy a brand new mk1 vRS today in the UK, the tax would cost £425. Pah!
