Shell 95RON Vs Tesco Super

Featured Replies

I was forced to fill up with Shell normal fuel the other week. Normally I use Tesco super because that's all I have access to.

This is what I've found going from a few tanks of Tesco SU to a full tank of Shell 95RON, just from the computer.

Going to work I've gone from ave 31mpg to 35mpg, coming back from work I've gone from ave 33mpg to 37mpg. I've not changed my driving style.

So I'm quite surprised, I don't think Tesco fuel is great but I'd have expected Shell normal to be about the same as Tesco SU not better.

What is weirder? Those MPG figures are better that I'd normally get on V-power by about 1mpg. In fact on a slow trip home I've had 39.9mpg.

The car doesn't feel like I have a body in the boot either, which is what Tesco 95RON feels like. I'd happily run the car on Shell normal if I had easy access to it.

Have to say I run both Fabia and Ocavia vRS (diesels) on Shell and only shell. Tried lots of different tanks of fuel in the fabia and always found that value for money Shell IMHO was the best fuel.

I've always used shell diesel by preference. Usually the cheapest round here. Plus, I had a bad experience in a vw pd130 on Morrisson's diesel. What should have been an easy overtake became quite exciting when I found that morrisson's fuel doesn't appear to allow the engine to make anything like 130 hp! Changed to Shell and had no problems since.

Is it not true that mainstream modern cars are designed to run on 95RON, so 98RON is pointless and gives no better performance?

I was always led to believe you should run on super unleaded all the time or it eventually knackers the engine.

I always run on Shell v-power because of this :mmm:

I have been using Tesco Super Unleaded 99 octane since it came out in my BMW M Roadster ,it loves it -but hates Tesco unleaded 95 !!

Use the best Diesel i can get (usually Shell) never City Diesel in my Superb !

in my opinion shell v power has always been the best , i use tesco 99 quite a lot because the garage is 2 miles from home, but im finding myself driving to the next town just to fill up with v power.

but lately ive been using sainsburys 97 ron , mainly because its 117 a litre compared to 122 for tesco , and ive been very impressed with it, i would definately rate it better than tesco 99, but still not quite as good as shell.

116.9 per litre is sainsurys in middlesbrough centre (chip as chips)! for any smoggies on here!

The engine has mappings for both 95 and 98 RON.

So no, running on standard unleaded will not "knacker your engine".

I was just surprised at how good 'normal' shell fuel was I normally use V-Power when I can get it but I don't know if I'd bother in the future.
