Dealer or DIY service?

Featured Replies

Well had my car for over 6 years now from new and its got a full skoda dealer service history. Now the question is do I carry on or do it myself and save a few quid?

Not planning on getting rid anytime soon and if I did I cant see it effecting trade in price however it might put private buys off. I'll be keeping all the reciepts however this doesnt prove the work has been carried out.

As per other threads on this subject, I wouldn't buy a car that didn't have a current dealer or specialist stamp or bill for a cambelt. I'd consider a decent looking motor that had DIY oil/inspection services though.

Do it yourself... its very easy to do the basic oil/filters - just keep receipts for the parts you buy for it.

I would (& am) going with this. At six years old (car not me!) I started doing my own servicing but intend to take it to the dealer for cambelt.

Agreed... the cambelt can be a bit fiddly.. and not good if you get it wrong...

Servicing the furby, the only thing required apart from basic tools is a socket to undo the oilfilter housing.....

John: if your at the next stretton fox you can have the 1/2-drive socket i bought for the oilfilter housing in exchange for one of stretton fox's finest pints B)

Col. You got a deal.

Started thinking as I've been dabling a little with other peoples cars this year. Did an interim service on a 318 last weekend and thought why do I pay other people to do basic servicing on my car when other things like brakes and suspension I do it myself. Do agree about the cambelt. The Clio from what I read is a pain and very often people get the timing wrong on the vvt.
