Remap - warranty

Featured Replies

Have been reading about remapping and how it affects your warranty.

Was at my local dealers as I am considering a vRS. Within 5 minutes of my first visit I was told that it could be remapped to 175bhp. I was then told this could be done by 2 methods. One costing

Should have said that I have been back to the dealer since and spoken to a different salesman. He also informed me of remap saying it made for a seriously quick car. Must have this look about me....lol!

Now I was informed that this did not affect the warranty of the car and that they had checked with the major insurance companies that it would not affect premiums. Comments?

The warranty is from Skoda UK, not the dealer - officially any deviation from the standard spec will invalidate the entire warranty. You might find your dealer is willing to turn a blind eye to it, but don't get a remap if you can't afford to lose the warranty.

I'd say the majority of insurance companies will increase the premium, and it's only a very small handful who won't...

You could report them to Trading Standards since both statements are rubbish. The Skoda New Vehicle Warranty specifically excludes any component which has been materially altered or modified without the written approval of SkodaAuto. No remaps, chips, tuning boxes or similar methods of tuning Skoda engines have been so approved for the UK. There is only one insurer that I am aware of (ie LiverpoolVictoria) who used to insure chipped/remapped cars without any increase in premium and they have just pulled the plug on such mods in a big way. I think you should buy from a different dealer.

(:( Beaten by Rob. Must learn to type faster).

Beware..

as stated above, the warranty is with Skoda uk and not the dealer. any change from standard spec, will invalidate that warranty.. the dealer may turn a blind eye.. but there is still a chance they would turn round and change their tune if something did break.

The dealer is telling porkies on both counts.

Firstly the warranty is provided by skoda who state clearly that if the car is remapped then the warranty is invalidated (or at least any components that could be affected by it would no longer be covered). Some deaers however will be happy to forget to mention the remap to skoda and will process any warranty claims for you. Just be aware that there is no guarantee that this dealer will always be around and other dealers may not take the same view.

As far as the insurance goes , the vast majority of insurers will charge you significantly more for a remapped car. The only one that didn't (LV) have now changed their minds.

As far as insurance is concerned the fast majority prob won't insure a remapped car at all. That is my experience when I phoned around when considering a remap.

I asked as I have a friend that had a mini one and got it remapped by BMW without it affecting his warranty. As you guys say the dealer must just turn a blind eye to it.

My dealer must remap a few though as salesmen said they have had a few fabias in.

Cheers

Adrian flux may insure you and admiral seem to be ok with it too. I'd imagine that the car will be warantied for all the parts unaffected by the map (not many, interior and body only I'd say) and you'd have a headache getting anything else done. When we got ours the dealer said they could be chipped but they were fast enough as is and shied away from it (were selling to my mum though!)

If I were mapping my own, new car I'd want to do it by remapping the standard ECU, then you could make a case that you've adjusted the timing to bring it into line (like adjusting the timing manually, as was common in the good old days before the flood etc) Jamsport over in northampton have a top lad who does this.

That said I like the charachteristics of the standard VRs enough that I wouldn't bother myself, its a pretty damn good package as is and I like my fuel economy (especially now I have my own 306 rallye which is lucky to hit half the fabias fuel consumption!)

Adjusted the timing to bring it into line with what, and why? If you change the code in the ECU in any way then you have tuned your car. QED.

BMW have "works" upgrade options which are warranty approved. but costs a fortune and a fabia will still be faster :D
