Rear drum brakes

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia TDI 2004 (the old model).

I went to get the rear brake shoes changed and the garage told me that my drums are worn and need to be replaced along with the shoes.

I've worked on bikes a bit and I've never had to replace the metal drum, so I'm a little bit sceptical.

Has anybody else had this problem? Do the drums normally need to be replaced from time to time? Or are they just chancing their arm?

Ger

I've heard of it happening, but if the garage haven't had the drums off to measure the internal diameter to determine that it's near or over the wear limit, then they're at it.

Thanks for your reply. They said they took it apart and had a look at it.

They also said that if you're replacing one drum you should replace the other side at the same time. Any thoughts on that?

Generally best to do brakes, shocks, etc in pairs.

So in your case, probably new shoes and drums on both near and off sides. Last thing you want is a brake inbalance (even if only a minor amount of braking is done with the rears)

Hi Ger

A 2004 TDi with drums ! I thought they would be discs ?

But yes now a days drums and discs do wear so that is possible (what mileage on the car ?) but as been said always do brakes, and suspension parts

as axle sets (so both sides).

Why don't you do the job your self not a big job and I would thing a awl-full lot less than the garage.

but checkout if it has drums ! I would guess they are discs

Think the 90 has drums, where as the 110 and 130 have disks. Certainly my 2001 110TDi has disks on the rear.
