help needed re installing central locking

Featured Replies

hi i was wandering if anyone can help, i have just brought a 2002 fabia estate 1.9 sdi - however it does not have central locking and it will be a bit of a pain as i have 3 small children, ( plus a dog to get in the back) i have seen previous posts and have looked on right click but dont know what kit to buy

If possible i would like to have remote central locking if this is not possible than normal central locking will be better than just manual.

so i would like to know how wasy it is to fit either central or remote central locking, what does it involve? and what kit works best ( if anyone has tried this) also is there any way of getting the boot to open at the same time instead of having to do it from inside the car?

many thanks. :)

Well the rclick stuff is just generic motors and brackets etc. If you want generic and cheap go to Maplins they have the whole kit for £25 (cheaper than rclick after delivery). I installed this kit in my Favorit and it worked quite well on the whole. Only problems were when the doors froze in winter. Also after a while the motors seemed to need adjusting (the rods that screw onto the lock rods) which would no doubt be more annoying on the Fabia as door card less easy to remove. This could have been due to the force needed to move the locks on the favorit though which were quite stiff compared to the fabia.

There's a genuine Skoda kit available http://www.accessories.skoda.co.uk/productdetail.aspx?p_no=BFC400101 the site there says the RRP is £127. I haven't managed to find an actual price from a dealer yet, and I'd be well pi$$ed if once I'd spent £127 it looked just like the £25 kit from Maplins.

Someone mentioned in another post that it is possible to swap the existing latch for a motorised one from a model with central locking. Being able to use this would involve fitting a remote kit from rclick, or if you had an alarm system installed most alarm systems offer the ability to remote control open a boot and lock/unlock doors with central locking. Models with central locking have an electronic handle above the number plate which operates the motor when the car is unlocked.

I am also looking into doing this but haven't got much further than the above.

thanks for that - do you know if the skoda version is better quality? have looked on maplins and right click and they are all different

http://www.rclick.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=53&products_id=327 is their basic 4 door central locking kit. That and the maplins kit http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=12303 are almost identical, at least in appearance. They consist of a bracket which screws onto the door and the motors then screw onto the bracket. The rod from the top of the motor clamps onto the rod under the bit you push down to lock the doors.

Don't know if you have missed this post http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/75546-fabia-central-locking-kit-retro-fit-guide/ sadly the pictures have all gone and the guide doesn't make much sense to me. I guess it is designed to be used in conjunction with some instructions provided with the Skoda kit. I would assume the Skoda kit would be better quality. If I plump up the cash to buy it will report back with my verdict.

Sadly there don't seem to be many involved in retro-fitting central locking threads, I think most people who want central locking bought a model that had it already. :(

thankyou for your help i will have to decide which one i will go for and my husband is going to attempt to fit it - will let you know how we get on

we have been all over looking for a car as my got wrote off, to no avail and then we came across the fabia and i really liked it, so decided that we woulld put up with no central locking but it is a bit tricky with three children and a dog to get in the car!

thanks once again

Hi again, I plumped up the cash (eek) and bought the official Skoda kit (£127) and the motors themselves (the main bit) looks no better than the Maplins/Rclick ones (probably the same). However, the brackets, clamps, and wiring provided are made tailored to the Fabia, which hopefully in theory should make it easier to install. The instructions provided are badly translated and a little difficult to understand. It also looks more involved to install than I had hoped. A special note is included that for 2005 onwards models you have to remove the door carriers (eek) and drill out some rivets. The manual also refers to some dealer only service manuals, but they are available to download from... http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=5dde693a7cf7f2b88066db0503cf4f2c438d78c2%207736e4a0

Note the instructions do state it is a very difficult job and should be done only by a skoda dealer. The main difficulty I see will be removing all the trim.

I won't be attempting the install for a while yet, so if there's any call for dimensions of the brackets/pics so people can make up their own I can try measuring them up at some point.
