peak district 515

Featured Replies

Going to be driving through the peaks tomorrow on above road so keep your eyes peeled.

Will hopefully post some pics if the missus plays ball and plays camera girl!

If anyone knows this road and owt to say about it let me know....................i only know the route from Manc to Buxton so will be entering unknown territory!

The Buxton to Ashbourne section is now 50mph limit for the whole length, which is a shame as there are some lovely straight bits. Having said that there used to be some nasty accidents around the Parsley Hay section

Be careful near the old Allsop station; the police are often there with their mobile tax (speed) trap.

If ever you get chance try the Manifold Valley road tunnel

always good for a blast

Nice one Dan

I'm from Buxton originally - miss all those roads - even though The Cat and Fiddle is now speed camera central :'(

did plenty of night rallys back then

Think we will move back there one day

Although the 'cat has SPECS on it now, many of the bends can still be plenty entertaining below 50mph. I'd suggest doing it when no bikers are about though as they have a habit of sliding into the road in front of you.

A515 used to be a cracker 10 years ago, but as others have said it now has a low limit and is camera infested.

515 is cack these days it's true. :(

great roads i live around 15mins from here not so great in winter tho lol.

Yeah, did the A515 yesterday (for the first time in too many years to own up to!) and even though the scenery is fantastic, it's now a shadow of it's former self!

A515 is a bit dull and boring, especially with all the traffic and the newish 50 limits!

There are some parallel roads which are still great fun, especially the road south of Chelmorton towards Bakewell.

Best way up on the left side is 'Morridge' from the A523 at Bottom House to the Winking Man PH on Axe Edge A53. It's a ridge along the border of the Peak Park and has fantastic views both sides and the best sunsets for miles!

My advice up there is to stick to the broad yellow, or brown B roads, on the OS Landranger 1:50,000 map ;) Longnor is a great stop (4 pubs), as opposed to Hartington which is too touristy. Pack Horse in Crowdecote is my fave for the best food!

Beware up towards Cat & Fiddle as they have deployed forward facing SPECS cameras to combat the death rate from bikers, which DO NOT have forward facing plates, ... and we have to pay for this incompetence!

great advice i used to work in longnor and it was great in the summer to just have a nice pint on the way home!

Re the SPECS setup, I thought they'd come up with a solution to capture bike details? Can't remember the details now; thought it had come up on here in another thread, when the proposed implementation was being discussed?

It is a shame, but as mention it can still be fun below 50mph. Just a shame that you can't make decent, safe progress on the straights now. All because of a minority who saw fit to get upto silly speeds, then fall off/crash into things (and I don't just mean the bikers by the way!) :dull:

But plenty of other entertaining roadway around - it just needs discovering :D

Cheers,

Steve

Another good road in this area, which you can tie in with the A537 and or A515 is the A5004 Long Hill (many years ago this used to be the original A6 between Whaley Bridge and Buxton). Agree that the Cat & Fiddle can still be entertaining even with the cameras, it depends what your driving, I have a 30 year old Triumph Spitfire which is fun on on their summers evening even restricted to 50mph. And I think it was 5th Gear who sent Sniff Niddell out on the Cat & Fiddle in a 911 and even he said there was still some fun to be had at 50mph!
