110 or 140bhp which one?

hi guys,cant make my mind up on a 110bhp or the 140 bhp diesel .which one is best and why?? i await your input.

Surely its just a case of, if you can afford and want the additional power then buy the 140? If costs (purchase and running) are more important to you then its the 110. :thumbup:

not driven the 110 so I cannot really comment there, although I have driven the 1.9 TDI PD 105 Octavia 4x4 which appeared to be pretty lively.

Regard the 140; this engine I feel suits the Yeti very well and would be my choice if it's within budget. She's quite happy to potter around but if needed for overtaking for example, then theres plenty of go with a smooth liner power delivery :happy:

The 140 has a 6 speed gearbox, whilst the 110 only has a 5 speed one

Do you need the extra 30bhp? If you are towing for example I would say go for the 140.

If your looking at a 4 pawed 110 as opposed to 2 then it's 6 speed and 30Nm more torque.

thanks for the replys lads,anyone think the 110 will be under powerd for the weight of the yeti?thinking 110 at the moment as i will not be towing anything and i dont race around the roads anymore[bean there done that] grown up a bit and take it easy now.any thoughts welcome.

Go cfor the 140 esp the 4X4. You than chip it for less than 300 pounds, and have yourself a 170.

Hi Mike,

if your thinking is leaning towards the 110 I would go with it, don't think you would find her underpowered (based on my experience with the Octavia 105 4x4), although I would choose the 4x4 over the 2wd due to the extra grip, torque and six speed box.

If the 'S' trim had options such as the rough road pack, hill hold and the centre rear arm rest (as in Germany) I think I could have settled for a 110 4x4 S myself. Unfortunately I had to go up a spec to get the options I was looking for and the 140 was affordable with the max limit of my budget. Therefore I decided to go that route, based on how pleased I'd been with the performance of my previous 140 PD Golf 4motion.

Hi again Mike,

have a look at my spec in the signature box, would recommend all those options. Obviously the spare depends on how much boot space you require, in my case with the Golf I was used to a smaller boot due to the Haldex coupling anyway.

Regarding the suggestion that you could "chip" the 140 to give you a 170 for £300 or upgrade the 110 to 140, I read somewhere that DPF equipped engines are unsuitable for chipping so you need to research this before making a decision.... DPF's are XXXXXX expensive to replace ! Come to think of it, do 110's and 140's have a DPF ? 170's certainly do.

yes all Yeti CR diesels have the DPF, as they meet Euro V emission regulations.

Had I not bought an ex-demo Yeti, we were going to have a 110 4 x 4 SE with off-road button in Candy White.

I don't think you'll have any problems with a 110 bhp engine. I've had both a Fabia and a Roomster with the earlier 105 bhp PD engine and while those cars were a bit lighter, I never felt performance to be lacking.

I remember my test drive in the 140bhp elegance and there was Mr White Van Man trying to overtake me on the inside lane on a roundabout on the A303 like a chump and I just gently pressed the accelerator on exiting the roundabout and before I knew it he was dissapearing into the distance in my mirror with no effort whatsoever !

I have done about 3000 miles on a CR110 front wheel drive.

I previously owned a 1998 Passat Estate tdi 110 (not PD).

Although I have my bus pass I still like to put my foot down. Speed and thrills, however, comes from my 1300cc Yamaha. In a car I value comfort and quiet more than anything else. Occasionally I tow a trailer but not a caravan so getting a caravan out of muddy fields is not an issue (thus front wheel drive). I live in a village in Suffolk, the driest part of the country, so a 4x4 is not necessary. Although this winter produced a lot of snow the last bad winter we had was 1979.

Plenty of others have endorsed what a nice experience the Yeti drive is, I agree. My wife loves it, a very easy car to drive. My 85 year old mother in law can get in and out without too much difficulty (may have made a mistake there :giggle: )

I have not found the engine lacking power and have only recently explored the upper reaches of the rev range. What is evident is how well it pulls from indecently LOW revs. The torque comes in early and seems very linear. I regard the five speed gearbox as just one less cog to swop compared to the six speed. From the brochure figures the 4x4 is slightly heavier, slower 0-60 with marginally worse fuel consumption. I have monitored my consumption, full to full with the following results:

First 500 miles 44mpg

next 447..........44mpg

next 492..........46mpg

next 440..........44mpg

next 490..........46mpg

next 527..........48mpg

Cumulative average 45.5. The Maxidot shows slightly less.

I expect these figures to improve. I am not a lead footed driver.

I expect it all comes down to what your expectations and preferences are.

Sanquhar is obviously pleased with his 110 2WD. I am very happy with my 170 hp 4WD. But then I came from an Octy Estate with the mule kick 140 PD engine. I did not want anything "less" in the SM, as I am getting to an age, where this could be the last "fun" car.

Having said that, from driving the 140 demo's and listeniong to others, I think the combination 140 CR and the 4WD Yeti is a very harmoniuos vehicle. Everything just seems to fit together. If I did not have the need for the mad dashes down through Germany, the 140 is certainly fine on our 80 MPH motorways and the general driving speed on other roads at around 60.

In absolute terms I'd say the 140 gives you more ie extra power, 4wd (also available with 110), 6 speed box. But do you want/need the extra?

The 4wd component alone costs £1700. The 110 2wd is a fair bit lighter so the benefits of the power difference between it and 140 4wd won't be as marked as the paper figures usggest i would think.

Finally, depending on your budget, you can have most of the benefits of the Yeti experience in a 110 in very respectable S trim while the 140 starts in SE.

In other words you can get a 110 2wd S spec for not a huge outlay.
