1.8 TSi fuel economy - thats better

Featured Replies

I needed to fill up with petrol today and stopped at a small petrol station I seldom use, I was about to fill up when I noticed that the pump was super unleaded only. I thought sod it and was about to move the car to another pump but then got boxed in by cars pulling in behind, so decided to fill up with super (Jet 97) rather than faff around moving the car.

Much to my surprise fuel economy has improved markedly - the computer indicating an average of 44.1 mpg for 120 miles of mixed back roads (narrow so only 30 - 40 mph) and dual carriage way driving. Prior to today the best I have managed was about 34 mpg and 30/31 mpg is more normal.

OK, so driving conditions today were favourable and I was driving more economically than usual but even so, thats quite some improvement. If normal driving conditions show a similar improvement, I think I'll keep on feeding it super rather than supermarket cheapest.

Has anyone else found this sort of difference running super unleaded?

The opposite I'm afraid. I ran my first two fill ups on super unleaded (98ron) and then decided to use ordinary 95ron. I have now undertaken some decent journeys (good lengths of mixed conditions similar to those incurred previously) and can say that there is absolutely no deterioration in mpg. Today I returned 43mpg (best ever actually) on a 55 mile journey - a mix of A roads and country lanes with 6 miles motorway included. 60mph on A roads and 70mph on motorway. This is in my new 1.8TSI DSG L&K estate. The maxidot average reading (reset on filing with 95 ron) is back up to its previous 36mpg.

Yes, maybe not so marked but can get into low 40's on a decent run. I only use Tesco 99, often get the 5p a litre off as the boss does her "big shop" there.

But real reason is I prefer the "feel" of the car on Super.

I can't say I have noticed any difference in feel on super, but will certainly keep using it provided the economy is better - a 2 mpg improvement is enough to justify the cost.

Apparently it takes a while - a few fill-ups. The ECU adjusts to it ........or something!
