Felicia 1.6 Overheated tonight

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Headed out to the girlfriends tonight and the car overheated. Checked the fat pipes connected to the thermostat housing and the one coming out the front was red hot and the one coming out the side was cold. The radiator was also cold.

Does this sound like a stuck thermostat to you guys?

Cheers.

yes, i'd say that is a fair diagnosis...

Well, I fitted the new thermostat this afternoon....

Things looked promising at first. The top hose got hot, then the bottom hose got hot, which it didn't last night. All going well I thought.

I then checked the temp gauge and it was going through the roof again. :wall:

I felt the radiator and noticed it was cold. Bugger!!!

I'm maybe thinking that the radiator has some crap in it, stopping the flow...? I'm sure the water pump is working because when the engine is revved I can see water pumping into the header tank through the small pipe on the side.

Also, I take it you don't fit those yellow caps that come with the thermostat. I take it that they are just to protect it during transport...?

Cheers, Aaron.

so did you replace JUST the thermostat? or the end housing too, as its normally the end housing that fails and the pin on the stat pushes its way thru instead of opening up the stat..

Ah ha, yes I did only just replace the thermostat and NOT the end housing.

Is this the end housing? DSC00103.jpg

Should that small hole in the middle that goes across the inside of the housing be like a cup or should the hole go straight through?

yes thats the end housing and it should just be a small cup not a hole straight thru... the pin of the stat pushes against that and forces the stap open.. if it cant push against it, it just pushes the pin out and leaves the stat closed.

Cheers Felica 16V. Took the housing off again and YES it was broken. The top of the small plastic cup had broken off allowing the pin to go straight through.

Got a new housing and its all sorted now. N!CE.

Hi All,

Got a new niggly problem now I've got the thermostat & housing sorted...

Basically the Temp Gauge sits between half & 3/4's rather than on the halfway mark. It also seems to wander slowly up & down between these marks. Sometimes it will sit on the halfway mark for a while before moving up and dancing around.

I don't think the new thermostat is at fault. The fan seems to kick in OK in traffic etc...

Do you think I may have cooked the coolant temp sensor when the engine over heated the other night? It is a fairly new sensor as I had starting issues last year, but I did take a chance and drove it home with steam coming out the header tank the other night.

Cheers,

Ya i would reckon it the sensor mate. My fabia which has the old skoda engine similar to yours overheated and i had to replace the thermostat, thermostat housing, coolant temperature sensor and the radiator fan. It seemed to fry everything.

Cheers. As it's only £8 delivered, I ordered one last night. Fingers crossed that will settled the gauge down.
