2.5 tdi oils

Featured Replies

Hi there. My 2.5 tdi is on long life service schedule, but I would prefer to give it more regular "normal" oil changes. What grade is recommended for summer and what grade for winter use? Can I just use Mobil Synpower 10W40 in summer, as I have a couple of gallons of this? And who actually makes Quantum oils, TPS seem to sell them as THE choice for these engines, in 5w30 grade I think, but never heard of Quantum up until recently.

Thanks!

Not sure if Quantum is owned by another brand or it is its own brand. All I know for the 2.5 a 4 litre 505 spec for FIXED servicing is 9 quid a tub from TPS. Been running mine on it for past 8k miles with no complaints, gonnah do a full oil/filter change again in couple k though.

I don't know who fills the bottles for VAG's Quantum oils but the largest 3rd party oil blending and packaging plant in the UK (possibly in Europe?) in at Fuchs in Stoke. I have watched the pallets of oil roll off the end of the blending/filling line and laughed my head off at all the different brands rolling off the line with the exact same oil in the bottles! I wouldn't mind betting that the Quantum oil (or at least some of it) comes from Fuchs in Stoke. Their own brands are Fuchs (obviously) and Silkolene.

Mmm.. interesting stuff. I have used Fuchs fylly synthetic oil before in my previous 4x4 and the engine sounded better and used less diesel. Really good oils in my opinion, and well priced too compared to the "market leaders" Mobil and Castrol.

Yes, I assure you it's true. That's why you really shouldn't by engine oil by brand, but by specification. It is the specifcation that matters, not the brand. I have a 1.9 VRs Fabia and a 2.5 V6 TDi Superb and they both get VW 507 oil put in them despite the Superb not "needing" the 507 grade. At £100 for 4 x 5 Litre packs off EBay I didn't think it makes sense to skimp on the oil.

And Mobil? Owned by Exxon. So is Comma. Would I pay for Mobil branded oil if I could by the same specification in a Comma branded pack for a lot less? Yes I would.

And Castrol? A brand name of BP.
