Bolero and the CAN gateway problem

Featured Replies

I need some advice regarding my purchase of a Bolero HU to replace my current Stream unit. Reading on the forums it states that there is a Battery drain issue caused due to the revision of my gateway. My car is a MY2006 and I have already installed the radio and noticed that the heater controls now do not display on the screen.

Was the battery drain issue that was fixed by later revisions of the firmware or does it mean I am going to have to upgrade the gateway? The radio for info is less than 6 months old.

I could try leaving it in the car and seeing if I get a flat battery but I don't really like that as an option.

On eBay I have noticed that someone in Poland is selling a device that apparently solves the drain issue. Has anyone got views on this? Have one and would recommend?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends what revision your CAN gateway is, Mine (55 plate) was too old and needed replacement. Its only £115 ish though, and very simple to swop over, so I figured it was worth it for getting a superior radio in the car. You might get lucky and find a secondhand one on Ebay, I couldn't so I bought a new one from my dealer.

Changing the gateway wont give you the heater control display onto a Bolero/Columbus (in an 06 car), I believe that's due to the age of the climate control panel not the gateway. I didnt miss it for a moment, its much nicer to have a new radio in the car.

Not sure about the ebay "fix", have you a link to the product involved?

Stop! Put your wallet away!

I wouldn't waste your money (unless you need TV in motion which is a bit crazy in itself not to mention that it really is intended for the DVD player in the RNS510). It's actually designed to get round Video in Motion and the cure to the power drain issue for a couple of RNS510 FW versions is by pure luck rather than design. It doesn't cure the power drain on RNS510 FW 2684 or 2724 so you have no guarantee that it will cure the RCD510 at all. The only way to really cure the power drain is to get a gateway of a similar generation as the HU.

It costs 94 quid. You could get the correct updated gateway for not much more and actually fix the problem properly and be protected from future firmware upgrades causing it to recur.

Best,

Mark

You cannot get an 06 climatronic display to show on the bolero or columbus as the climatronic unit is simply not compatible with the bolero. To get the display back you need to replace the whole climatronic panel with one from a facelift octy, modify some wiring and replace the dash surround with the revised part.

To fix the battery drain you need to replace the gateway, that ebay item is not compatible with the bolero.

Is there a fitting guide for the replacement and recoding of the gateway?

Either that or is somebody willing to do it and the recoding in the surrounding Bristol area?

Its easy to change the gateway, you just need to lower the glovebox. Recoding with VAG-COM is also easy for anyone who has used it. I reckon an hours work tops.

As said above, I wouldn't go near that Ebay thingy. Spend the extra £20 for a proper, newer CAN Gateway.

This may sound like a silly question but if I replace the CAN Gateway with a new uncoded module will the car still be drivable? Or does it need to be coded first?

Should drive OK, certain things might not work exactly as they should but it should start and run OK

Hi milesunder,

I just bought a new can gateway on ebay from a guy in Taiwan:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300421365790&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT#ht_912wt_1097

100 USD (65 quid) plus 20 USD postage. Great deal. He has 3 left.

Best deal going anywhere. Ask him about about import duty before bidding though.

Best Regards,

Mark

I might be interested in what this guy has.....

Is 1K0 907 530 AA the correct part no. for all Octavia II models ?

Anything after Rev L is good. Current Revisions are AA and AD. You can get an AA rev unit from either a Skoda dealer or Czech supplier for around 120 quid. Having said said that my unit has not been delivered yet so hold that cheque!

I'm sure the guy is kosher but we'll see.

Best Regards,

Mark

Interested in the info here, but being extremely ignorant with regards modern day equipment, can someone just confirm, I have a MY2006 vRS with a Stream MP3 HU, I want to change it for a Bolero. Would I be right in thinking that its not as simple as swapping the head units? I will also have to change this can gateway thingy, and have the software updated using a Vag com thingy!

Again, apologies for the ignorance.

Cheers for this, this guys price is great, but have a few concerns about getting it.... How long ago did you order it ?

Hello, we meet again.... same topic, different thread :-)

My understanding of the upgrade is that if you just stuck the Bolero into the car, it would work ok, but soon after you would find you had a flat battery.

There is a firmware update to fix this issue, but I've read that the older Can Gateway units don't take kindly to this update, so you need to upgrade the

module itself.

Once you have the new gateway unit fitted, it needs coded by a dealer or someone on here with the knowledge and a VCDS (Vagcom) unit.

I'm sure the new Can gateway, stereo and coding could be done an dusted in little over an hour.

I've not decided either way whether to change my Stream unit for a Bolero, since I'm looking at around atleast £350-400 and I'll probably still listen to the

same radio stations.....

Indeed we do, just thought asking the same question more than once would guarantee an answer, the irony is its been answered 3 times, as I ask the question again on a thread in the ICE forum...... :giggle:

Thanks again though, I think I've decided to spend the money on some extra horsesinstead, DP and Sport cat, is the next step.

Hi Mate,

Got it today so that was a week from purchase on eBay to delivery. Not too bad from Taiwan for 20 US Dollars. All looks good. Not fitted it yet but I don't foresee a problem.

My feeling is he's one of the good guys. Make sure you get a Rev AA or AD (40S or 45S). He's also selling Rev L but I don't know if they are future proof for firmware upgrades in a year or two.

Thanks for letting me know..... A week from Taiwan is very good !

Not so sure on the Bolero now, so think I'll upgrade my CAN and get everything ready for a columbus in the next few months.

well just to let you know that I got mine from eBay from www*carsystems*pl. I paid £80 + £10 p&p. Paid for it yesterday and got the order tracking reference this morning. So hopefully this come some time early next week.

I did try seeing if the Bolero would work without the upgrade. I left it in the car for two days and bottled it, removing for fear of a flat battery. When I removed the radio from the car the radio was warm, even though I hadn't driven the car for several hours. Then a couple of days later the car wouldn't start because the battery was flat. Well after a vist by the AA and they couldn't find a problem with the electrical system or the battery I had to buy a new charger. So I think the new Gateway might be a sound investment!

So the plan is to fit the gateway next weekend. Does anyway have a fitting guide to do this? I understand it is located behind the glove box?

Also will anyone be in the Bristol area who fancies doing the coding? Beer tokens are available!

Btw IMHO the Bolero radio is better then the stream. The sound quailty is alot more richer using the same speakers. It is well worth the upgrade. The only issue I have is the price of the units. They tend to be selling for around the £300 mark which is about 150 cheaper then a Columbus. However, Boleros tend to be available from shall we say less suspect sources then the Columbus units. So I guess at least you get piece of mind.

I can help you with the coding but I'd suggest you don't remove the old gateway until you're ready to do the whole swap. It would be a good idea to interrogate the current one and make a note of all the current coding before swapping over!

Good idea?? It's essential!

Mike

Okay, so I need to dump the CAN info before I do the swap, but to confirm how easy is it to get to? Is it behind the glovebox? Is there a guide?

Look forward to receiving any advice

I certainaly might take you up on your kind offer. Are you North or South Bristol? Once I get the CAN I will contact you to arrange the recoding.

But dont dump the old gateway until the list of modules is saved. You will need it to recode the new gateway. You cannot take the old coding and code the newer gateway with it, because the code of the newer gateway is longer.

I swaped a K gateway for a newer (either Q or R, dont remember exactly) and the coding had to be entered manually.

Hi,

I had a problem with my alternator a few months back (failed diode caused negative charging of the battery. A very nasty experience losing PAS and ABS brakes at 70mph in the middle lane with no power for hazard lights. New pants that day I can tell you!). For one reason or another (idiot mechanic) I ended up with the failed alternator still fitted to my car.

Anyway, after that I forked out 40 quid on a booster battery unit from Argos made by Challenge (emergency purchase on a Sunday late afternoon) and I cannot fault it. Best 40 quid I have ever spent. There are others on the market that are way more expensive but I reckon the one I bought is the business.

The Challenge unit has 3ft jump leads, a cigarette socket, and a range of varied voltage outputs sockets for a variety of devices, and a built in light. It has enough crank amps to start a derv engine repeatedly, It can dump enough current into a completely flat battery in 15 minutes to get it up to a healthy state for trickle charging on the road. I keep it under my variable boot floor and put in on charge for 24 hours every two to three months to keep it up to speed.

Much quicker than waiting for the AA.

I also found it great when I was messing around with RNS510 firmware versions. I used it to power the HU indoors while I flashed and re-flashed the firmware. It ran the Columbus for 4 hours at a stretch.

Best Regards,

Mark

Hi from Italy! Probably I have the same problem. I want to change the terrible stream mp3 with bolero in my octavia scout 2007. The revision of my gateway is K.. :( not far from L but.. It's sure that K give me problems?

I've seen many possibilities on Ebay for new gateways and my friend could recode it by vag-com. But the problem is: Where is the gateway..? At now i've seen only golf mk5 location under the sterring.. and in the Octy..? Thanks a lot! :)
