Golf turbo problems

Featured Replies

My friend has a Mk 4 Golf 1.9 tdi. He has a couple problems with his turbo when it kept just loosing power and no turbo. He could turn the engine off and back on again and it all works fine. The other day he said the same thing happened but with quite a bit of smoke out of the exhaust and the quite whistling noise could be heard when driving it. He doesn't drive fast and he has done a lot of favors for me and i want to try and help him out. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Sorry if this is in the wrong section

Thanks

First thing to check is the intercooler hoses, start at the top left pipe looking towards the engine bay, if it has standard VW pipework it has wire clips holding the pipe tp the EGR valve. With the engine running listen for sucking noises from the pipework and joints going to the Intercooler which tucked under the offside wheelarch and check the return pipe as well. It's quite a common problem on the VW TDI range cars. If all is well then the turbo variable vanes could be gummed up and need a a clean, not normally diy job unless your cood with the spanners.

thanks for the reply so it doesn't sound like a turbo blown or anything because i thought turbos would either bang or make a loud noise when they blow, He said that it just started smoking.

Thanks
