Jacking and axle stands

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Getting my wheels refurbed shortly and can't find a set to borrow - looks like I'm gonna need to get the car on axle stands.

I've got a Halfords 2 ton trolley jack (it doesn't have a rubber middle or anything to protect what you're jacking) and 4 stands. I know it's dead easy to mangle the sills on these, so does anyone has any advice as to where I need to jack the car and place the axle stands? Where do I want to be using wood to protect the chassis?

If anyone has any pictures/ diagrams that would be excellent. :)

Thanks again,

Neil

On my non Halfords stands, it recommends not to use four at once. Maybe something to check on you potential purchase?

When I did this with my polo i went to the scrap yard and bought 4 random rims and laid them flat on the floor and lowered the car onto them one at a time so the hubs say on the scrap rims! job done!

I see. How would I go about putting just the front on stands? Jack with wood at the correct point on the sill and place the stands under the console bush mounts?

and it's definitely safe to have the car on axle stands under the bushes?

How not to do it after pic lol! Used halfords 2 tonne jack to do this.

All fixed now though.

Well, maybe OK if you know what you are doing on perfectly flat concrete, but for someone who does not really know much about where to jack and place axle stands, I would not recommend it, it's a recipe for a disaster.

Please take note NeilH, try and find some old wheels as suggested or building blocks, because if anything moves on the above recommendations and it rocks over, you have got a BIG problem and a lot of damage to sort out, let alone the possibility of injury to yourself, I personally would NOT risk it, you have been warned.

DB.

Has anyone got any good and clear image of where to place axle stands on the front and the rear? Completely useless with technical info

2 either side of the rear beam,

at the front, just behind the ending ehtere are 2 parts that stcik out from the floor of the car, these are solid and the safest place to jack it at the front,

personally if i was to leave them for 2 days id buy a set of spare steelies and put them on.

daft question biggy but you dont have an image of exactly where the axle stands were sited do you?
