Passenger door lock

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a problem with my passenger side front door.

My locking setup is the 2 click setup, where 1 click opens the drivers door, 2 clicks the rest of the car. The problem first came about where on the 2nd click the passenger door wouldn't unlock. So i'd lock all the doors again and try again, and more often than not it would then open.

Then it got to the point where even that wouldn't do it, so I had to actually get in the car and lock and unlock using the button on the door card, and eventually it would pop up. Then, after a few weeks, thats failed too, and I had to physically pull the handle while pressing the lock unlock, until it popped up.

Now, the lock wont even budge at all. I pull the handle and let go, the lock drops back down. It's like the door is deadlocked.

Any suggestions?

Do the speaker, electric window and mirror adjustment and heater all work correctly?

Remove the door card and take a look. Perhaps the solenoid has seized? Never had reason to look at mine in the Siperb so unsure of design, but have had it in an Alfa where solenoid seized and cable connected to it snapped as a result of pulling the door handle.

The only other issue I've had was when the battery was disconnected some weeks ago. My central locking on rear passenger just randomly flipped up and down when it chose to. Disconnected the battery a second time, then reconnected the problem resolved itself. I doubt this is the cause of your problem though.

If you take the door card off you are not going to see much unless you start to take the door apart. There is a metal sheet covering most of the internals in the door. Cant remember if this is bolted or pop rivited on.

Out of interest though, I had my door cards off a few weeks ago to fix a couple of my speakers and since putting the door cards back on this problem has been rectified on one door and has started on another door (incidently its the front passenger door). Might be worth just removing the card and trying the lock as the hole in the door card the lock pops through is quite a tight fit.

Theres a guide in Superb Technical guides for replacing speakers which shows you how to remove door cards

Thanks for the responses!

Speakers, electric windows, mirror adjustment and heater all work correctly, it's just this one issue I have.

How do you get the door card off without opening the door?

Edit: Forgot to mention, this happened in my MK4 Golf and it started working again off its own back after around 6 weeks.

Oh the door is stuck shut :S

Sometimes if mine did this, if i pulled the handle so the door lock pin was up and then press the unlock button on the drivers door it would unlock it, but i see you have already tried this.

I dont think you are going to be able to get the door card off with the door shut, there are 2 torx head screws at the bottom of the card which need to be removed, and 2 screws behind the trim in the door handle. You then need to be able to pop the card off from the edge of the card.

My brother spoke to the local Skoda dealers yesterday, he's in the motor trade, and they told him how to get the door open. I spoke to a mechanic who said you have to take the rear door off but apparantely this isn't the case. So if all goes well I'll post up the fix once it's done.

Sounds good, my passenger door lock is starting to fail as well :S

Well the quick fix didn't work for my problem, but I have come across this link while I've been trying to find the problem, could be of some help to someone out there as I'm sure things are probably the same

Back to the drawing board for me though emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

Thats an interesting link, dont like tha fact the mechanism is attached to the windows regulator though :S

Does your lock sound different to when it was working? Like its struggling to open lock?

Think im going to get my door card off again before mine fails, its becoming worse by the day.

Probably not much cop to you but if you do manage to get your door card removed AND manage to get the door unlocked, as a temporary measure you can unplug the electrics from the door (big plug attached to windows motor) and the lock will not operate electronically, so it never dead locks. Bit of a chew on granted. Im going to run like this until I get a chance to remove the door inards. Procedure for taking door apart is a faf :S

Well guys still no further forward...

So far I've tried all the pressing of buttons in different combos, pulling the handle to try and get the lock up but it just drops back down as soon as you release the handle (so something is pulling it back down), I've had the door card off as much as is possible with the door stuck shut to see if anything is catching but that big ass metal plate pretty much scuppers that plan. I've also had the wing off to check the wiring as it goes into the door from the main body of the car, testing each wire with a meter while pressing the buttons. Still no joy.

So next up I'm thinking passenger seat out, carpets lifted and check the wiring down there.

One thing I'm wondering, is this problem connected to the interior lights not working? I ask because they run off the same fuse and I have been more focused on getting the door open for safety reasons than worrying about some pesky lights.

Soooo any ideas? And could it be connected to the lights problem?

It sounds like the lock solonoid is permanently energised for some reason, and if the courtesy lights are "on but not illuminating" it makes me wonder if the problem is the door microswitch being stuck.

My brother and his panel beater friend managed to get my door open in the end, although I dont know how as I had just ventured inside to make a coffee!

One thing I do know is they had to snap a few clips in the process of getting the door card off, which is no big deal. It turned out the circuit board for the locks seems to have a dry joint or something (those in the know will know which bit I mean, thats the best I can explain!), so sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't. I got a quote for a new one, £40 from the stealers.

As the car is now up for sale, and the fact that I usually travel alone, I haven't bought a new one as it's no big deal and a cheap fix for the buyer.

If anyone else has a similar problem I can get a more detailed answer for the fix

Would you be able to find out how they got your door open?

I have the same problem on my back door now, was sat for 30 mninutes before trying to get it to unlock so I could disconnect the power to the lock but without any luck. I have removed the door card with the door shut and i will be able to remove metal inner skin with the window motor attached to it when I get a chance, im just curious as to how you actually managed to get the lock to open?

Thanks :)

Ian

This is a well known B5.5 fault - cracked soldered joints on the pc board in the door. Lousy detail - solder has no fatigue life.
