Glazed brake discs

Featured Replies

What causes brake disks to glaze?

My fronts are looking quite bad...

My driving style is normally very gentle, I normally coast up to most junctions in order to conserve fuel. This means my brakes rarely get used. Sometimes, on a country road, I have a blast and here my brakes get used quite a bit. It's certainly not circuit use, but it's enough for them to get a bit hot!

Hi I will probably be shot down in flames by more wisened people but a gentle driving style using the brakes conservatively will have the effect of polishing the discs this will glaze the pads, you probably suffer a little from brake fade when driving "hard" maybe. Although the gentle style is good for fuel economy it is not good for the pads etc, i was told by a very wisened old mechanic once that if this happens you should carry out the following proceedure on a clear dry straight road;

1. travelling in a straight line at legal speeds brake as hard as possible activating the abs is hard enough! but do not stop completely slow to about 10mph.

2. Repeat above once or twice more, there is no need to accelerate hard as you are trying to recondition your brakes not fry eggs!

I have always used this method to recondition what feels like unresponsive brakes.

Why should you get shot down in flames?

Just what I would do :)

i had a friend who was so light on her brakes that the outer edges of the disk had actually started corroding badly and and her brakes were terrible. I took the car out and gave it a few miles of decent heavy braking which improved the stopping power considerably but she still ended up having to replace both discs and pads because they were IMO dangerous.
