Just thought I would introduce myself as I'm a new (to me) Octavia owner!

I'm Marcus and bought myself a 2001 Octavia SDi a week or so back which needed a little bit or work doing to it. My wife has a VW Touran that we've had since new (2004) and I had a Mk3 Golf estate that I used for work but it's a 1.8 petrol and although I can push 40mpg if I drive like a granny, the cost of the fuel for my 66 mile/day commute was starting to get a bit silly. I saw the Octy on eBay as 'Spares or Repair' possibly needing a head gasket but on looking at the car I suspected it was OK. Anyway, thanks to information found on this site, turns out all it needed was a water pump (plastic impellor had fallen off).

So, after a cambelt, waterpump and getting it through it MOT today, it's cost me a smidge over £650 for what seems like a great car that will serve me well as a work hack! Even with 140,000+ miles, it still drives really well!

Well, after my first week of commuting with the Octy I am more than happy with it. I've just worked out the fuel consumption at 54mpg!!
