Reversing Camera Retrofit

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what part number I would need in order to retrofit a reversing camera with the lines that move when you turn the steering wheel? I'm pretty sure it needs to be described as a high line camera?

I've found several likely candidates on cars-equipment, but also received some conflicting advice from them.

So far it's a possibility of 5E5827566G, or 3V0827566A, or 3V0827566N

My first post here, and english is not my native. I have finally managed to install the Sinosmart reversing camera on my Octavia mk3 MY2015 (nickname: brownie). The hardest part was the cabl

  • If your tailgate handle is 92x35mm and you ensure the camera is an NTSC camera then yes it will fit and work once you’ve done the relevant coding tweaks.

That’s correct, however I would ask how much the lines mean to you? The camera linked above can be coded into the Amundsen HU as can all the cheap RCA plug ones, you just chop the end off and crimp VAG terminal ends on and plug them into the quadlock. I believe the highline camera also has the washer jet to keep it clean which is a good idea, but my camera was £20 and when the correct NTSC one gets here (I’m hoping by the weekend) I’ll detail the install. For now, this is a £8 universal RCA input camera rigged to my car for testing. Much cheapness :D

Do I even need a reversing camera...?!

I think if I was getting a camera, I'd like the benefit of the moving lines - particularly for when 'other' people are driving my car and may or may not struggle with the size of the estate compared to their usual car...

I've also had a tow hitch installed for when we inherit the in-laws little river boat. I think the factory camera has the ability to look down directly on the towing hitch to aid hooking up.

I was only wondering, as the camera linked above and mine can be had for £20 or so, whereas a proper VAG highline one will be around the £2-300 mark with the correct loom. There is a lot more to the wiring for a moving lines camera than a fixed lines one. For me, the lines aren’t worth the 90+% price increase, but if they are worth that to you then go for it. If you might like to try it on the cheap before spending bigger money, take a look at a cheaper camera first :)

How does that fit onto the back of your car? Have you just bought the empty handle housing and put in your cheapo camera?

No, I have a whole handle with a camera in it. The test picture shows a generic camera which is usually employed on the back of my Dad’s Alfa 159 poked out of a numberplate light hole. I did this because the damn park sensors didn’t work and these provide the screen for the reverse camera, so even though the camera was working, the screen wasn’t giving me a picture because of the parking sensors. Now that issue is fixed I’m just waiting for the correct camera which is also a new boot handle to arrive. As I say, I really hope it’s here by the end of the week. I have already done the power and video wiring as the first one came last month but in PAL format when it needs to be NTSC. So it’ll be a 10 min job to pop the boot panel off and fit the new camera in place when it arrives :)

Is it an Aliexpress special? Be interested to see what you've got.

I got it on eBay, faster postage and all that. Turned out to be a grave error as it’s taken 6 weeks for them to admit the error and send out another. It was posted last week so I am hopeful it’ll be here soon!

It’s this camera though

Feel slightly mugged off knowing it’s that much cheaper there, and I’ve bought loads of AliExpress before, but nothing more than a tenner though haha. I wanted something quickly and I paid the price for my error! If you have a Pre MY16 car this camera is ideal because it fits in the existing tailgate without cutting. If you have a Post MY16 car you’ll be able to use a nicer, more OEM looking camera as linked a few posts back.

I have a 2015 vrs Estate with parking sensors and Amundsen head unit

will this camera work ok with my car?

may order one to try after the xmas post rush and fit to my 2019 octavia se tech estate.

from my quick and limited research its just basically plug it all in

Sasha, can you post a picture of the tailgate with the camera fitted?   I've seen some cameras which you can slight see from behind and it stops the rear and find that sort of ugly.... (worst still a a lot seem to be factory fit like that :envy:)

Is that the normal handle size? I'd be tempted to do this mod, but don't feel up to taking a dremel to my car!

Yes for pre MY16. MY16 and onward it’s 112x48 I think, but you’ll have to measure your existing boot handle first.

Thanks

I assume when reversing the camera image overrides the image of the reversing sensor location? I will have a think because I found this image quite useful compared to when I had a reversing camera on my roomster

You should still get a plan view image of the car that shows the sensors on the reversing camera display screen.

Ah yes, sorry should have taken a closer look at the images above

Yes, you’ll be able to see it, but it won’t be bad. It’s not quite as small as the OEM one but it’s a good compromise for much cheapness :)

we like cheapness.... maybe I'll add one to my santa list :-)

Does this require running wires through those car to the head unit or is the wiring there and just needs the unit connecting up. Sorry if this is a dumb question I have not done any physical mods to my VRS so don’t want to buy a camera and then not be able to fit it!

Unless you get one with a wireless connection, then yes, you'd have to run the wires through the bendy connector at the top of the boot lid, through the headlining, down the C pillar, along the door trims and up to the fusebox/headunit/canbus connections (depending on what type of camera you're getting). Even a wireless one will require some fiddling in the dash behind the glovebox, etc.
