Stowing the parcel shelf

Featured Replies

In two minds as to whether it's even worth commenting on, but I tend to remove the parcel shelf on cars fairly frequently and the question is always what to do with it; on the last car it just went into storage and was never used at all.

Anyway, pleased to find that with the rear seats in their upright position there is a neat space between the backs of the seats and the wheel arches for the parcel shelf to slot into. It's out of the way but there when I want to put it back.

Excellent idea.....thank you.

Just yesterday I was standing with the shelf in my hand wondering what to do with it.

Great solution weaver - thanks

Pictures please!

My first car was a 1982 Golf 1. The parcel shelf in that was permanently fixed to the one piece rear seat. But if you tipped the seat forward and then folded the shelf onto it the shelf stayed there when you put the seat back in position. So it was totally out of the way. But in saying that it was only about 15mm thick and not as "sculptured" as these new ones.

On a Toyota RAV4 I think the shelf is a 3 or 4 piece consertina affair that has a special neat storage area under the boot floor when not in use. An even better idea in my view.

Anyone seen the parcel shelf in the back of a MINI Clubman?! Awful! It is a fabric/plastic affair with 3 steel cross members that don't want to slide, that don't lift up when you open the rear doors - well since it is not a hatchback - Just awful. Only beaten in awfulness but the silly think the back of the Volvo C30 where the rear hatch glass goes down so low you have to have a VERTICAL bit of parcel shelf running along this window!

Will try and do a pic over the weekend.

Just to say that it's the narrow end (ie the window end) that has to point downwards, so there is a bit of a jiggle to flip it up over the two pins that it hinges from before it will slide into the slot. It's one of those things that sometimes just works - or if you stop half way and think about it it seems to get stuck. Does all work though.

The frightening thing is that I have gone through the manual twice - or so I thought:rofl:

But reading the pdf version gives you something to do whilst waiting for your car to be built and saves valuable driving time when you finally get it
