Where do car companies get there MPG data from, I've just been looking at BMW's for my father and this one makes me laugh.

How the fudge is that ever gonna see 57mpg...........

He has a similar model now albeit older and that get about 25-30 on a good day

I think all new 3 series come with start-stop technology as standard

So in an "extra urban" cycle (i.e stuck in a town traffic jam) that kind figure could be posible

Considering the performance of my BMW 123D (same power as my first Scooby Turbo + 50% more torque) I think the fuel consumption is excellent. The car has stop-start, intelligent alternator and compressor and does other clever things like automatically closing off the radiator grill with a rotating blind jobbie. The whole thing is still a bit cleverer than the Audi equivalent. Saw almost 50mpg after an 80mph cruise in a 245bhp 330D recently.

All very well in a tractor, but this is real fuel powered

I can't see how a few gizmos will let it sit in traffic at 50 mpg plus, somebody show me lol

I think the BMW figures are proportionately the same as everyone else’s figures. They are only achievable with an incredibly light right foot, but from my experience the BMW efficient dynamics does make a noticeable difference, especially in the diesels where the already highish mpg figures make a small % decrease in consumption all the more obvious. The 330D is allegedly about 7mpg more efficient than the A4 3.0Tdi and I reckon the true difference to be about 5mpg overall, so I think there must be something in it (I accept the 4x4 doesn’t help things though).

Maybe the mpg figures are believable as the 0-62 time of 0.0 seconds!

it is amazing what MPG figures can be achieved today with simple electronic management devices. for example, a friend here has a Dodge Ram pickup, 5.7litre and weighs 2.5 tonnes. he boasted to me that he got 27mpg on the highway while cruising at 60mph, i expressed my cynicism with the use of several expletives! turns out his truck is equipped with Active Fuel Management http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Fuel_Management which cuts off 4of the 8 cylinders when they're not really needed. he let me drive the beast out to our last skiing trip and with the cruise on, 2 up, sat at 60mph it did indeed avg 26.7 over 110 miles of highway. of course, round town it drinks like an Irishman on St Patricks day (15mpg is the best he's managed!) but it shows what can be acheived without the extra weight of electric motors and batteries...

I sold a C4 Corvette (not explosive) and as the young man left with it I said “it’ll do 30mpg if you stick to the speed limits”. He laughed and said he would ring me to let me know if he got close. I got the phone call a few hours later (he had a long drive home) and he was over the moon. 30 mpg from an automatic, 5.7 litre car! I suspect he doesn't get that figure now he is used to it, but on the motorway, it's surprisingly easy to get around 30mpg out of the C4

IF you are going to readanyting into the published mpg figures then you should use the combined figure and not the extra urban. even then they will be a bit over opimistic (10-20%).

Not just a BMW issue, this is the same with all these published figs, which are set under standard conditions.

My BMW 118d is supposed to do 62mpg (combined) but over teh last 45K mls has averaged 47, which I am delighted with.

Pretty much my take on things. If I get within 20% of the published figure I'm normally happy enough, and any closer is a bonus. I'm sure I could get close if I modulated my right foot a little better, but I just can't help having a lead weight in every right shoe I possess :)

According to BMWs advertising, they actually make their own energy, so if they can defy the laws of physics a few extra mpg isn't going to be a problem. It was on the telly, so it must be true.
