Numberplate fixings

Featured Replies

Having missed out on the group buy for Dubmeister 'plates as my V5C has only just arrived and I now need to swap my personal reg onto the car, I'm considering a set of these apparently road legal Dubmeister pressed aluminium numberplates.

Now, my original 'plates are stuck on with double sided tape, but I wouldn't want to rely on tape to hold aluminium 'plates on! Behind the numberplates, are there bosses/plugs/threads to enable numberplates to be screwed on instead (like a Ford has, 9" apart, for example)? I don't want to start drilling holes in my tailgate, so if there's no existing mounts, I'll have to stick with boring old perspex 'plates :S

Thanks,

Dale

There are two pre-mounted nylon bushes set into the rear.- haven't had reason to take the front one off.

Hi Dale

I am not sure what you mean about "bosses plug, and threads" but no matter what you use to fix the plate holders you will have to drill the metal somewhere, but what you need is something called

"rivinut" which is type of nut that is fastened on like a poprivit (you will need a tool like a riviting tool) but means that you can screw a threaded screw in rather than a self tapper.

One thing that you can do if you use some thing like these, once fitted you can paint over them so as the rust does not get through.

just look at the link and it will explain a bit more

Hmm, two conflicting replies :S

I'm not fitting a plate holder - just aluminium plates in place of plastic ones.

RADIOTWO - you've misread what I put: "bosses/plugs/threads", not "bosses plug, and threads" - meaning something already attached to the steel of the tailgate allowing me to screw a numberplate to it without having to drill a hole...

Hi

I have used double sided tape with perspex plates. It is a year since I replaced the original plates and so I can't offer fotos or certainty but:

IIRC The rear tailgate has a couple of plastic inserts into which you can screw a screw! (I don't remember if the plugs are pre-threaded.)

The front bumper has nothing, but since it is plastic you can either use self tappers or bolts depending on whether you can get a hand behind it.

Are you absolutely sure that the pressed plates are legal in the UK . I seem to remember a thread about German pressed plates are not legal in UK.

As far as I remember a guy was fined £60 for having this type of plate.

These guys make German plates and they say they are NOT legal German plate law

That is not to say that a pressed plate with the right font and markings is not legal in the UK.

I'm sure Police will make sure that any plates can be instantly recognised by their Number Plate Recognition system and speed camera systems
