Metalic rattle from gear linkage? Any ideas?

Featured Replies

Hi all, got a bit of a strange noise coming from my 98' felicia's gear linkage. Anyone had the same problem? When can I get bushings etc. from, has anyone done an overhaul on one?

This is probably the large washers near the front of the linkage. The bolt works it's way loose and the washers rattle around with the vibrations of the engine.

I did an overhaul but it was the earlier model one but principally the same.

Try Jorily:

They do a repair kit for the front joint:

There is also a repair kit for the gear stick end too but can't find it on their site. That should give you a completely like new gear linkage.

If you get stuck with the gear stick end give me a shout it's a bit fidly.

I'd doubt it's the washers, it's usually the joint at the front. Easy to tell, run the car, lie on the floor on the passenger's side and grab the linkage with a gloved hand. If it stops rattling, then there's the problem. Can either be the joint wearing, or it can be where the linkage connects to the selector shaft - I've had one wear the roll pin hole oval, needed removing and welding up to sort it.

Phil, the repair kit seems a lot for what it is, is it worth the cash? The noise is very annoying! Just seems quite a lot.

Can't really comment I'm afraid as I had the earlier style joint which came complete at about the same price but the work to repair it was worth it in the end as the gearstick went from stirring soup to nice and tight!

I think the bits individually from a dealer probably work out cheaper than from Jorily. One of the few instances a dealer is cheaper. Be prepared with the part numbers though, it's often not a fun experience trying to explain what bits exactly you want at a dealers, they usually don't know what they sell. vagcat.com will help finding PN's.
