ipHONE os 4.0 Beta 2

Featured Replies

Courtesy of a developer friend of mine, I get a copy of the new Iphone OS's as and when.

So accepting that 4.0 version 1 did have some issues, I had hopes that version 2 (released earlier today) would address some of those.

Oh no. It leaves them alone and adds a few excellent howlers. like breaking the camera and photo apps completely.

and you don't even want to know how much pain trying to get back to an operating system that works is causing.

Sort of disappointed that the 'it just works' idea that made Apple attractive has now been replaced by the Microsoft mantra of 'if it compiles, ship it'.

Surely a beta test version should be fairly close to general release quality, or at least not be breaking core functionality?

Oh well, happy day attemtping to get back to where i was last week.........

Microsoft tests it's stuff a lot, it's just that you can't possibly test every hardware/driver combination that is supported.

Apple on the other hand restrict the hardware, so should be able to test much more and have almost no faults if they kept testing it until it was ready.

Fact is that ready usually means there are not too many major bugs.

BTW, love the picture babs, quite accurate i think.

You have a BETA not the official release.

No software no matter who makes it will ever be released without having a few betas first. That way any "real world" faults are ironed out before the major release. Even then there will still be bugs/flaws.

You have to hand it to Apple though there software is generally (not always) bug free bar one or two minor glitches. Damn sight better than microsofts constant patching of security flaws

Just my tuppence

:notme:

As said a Beta can be no where near what software maybe like when released. It's only when you get to release candidate stage that you could possibly think of complaining about a software build.

At work, we release betas to test specific componants of a piece of software that we're writing. Sometimes nothing else will work in the beta because we only want to test one thing.

whilst I agree with the Beta comments

that's comically inaccurate...

I have to reset my iPod more than I have to reset my Windows7-based PC, or my Windows XP-based laptop... :smirk:

What? You run a pre GA developer codebase and are surprised things do not work.

Entirely unnecessary.

If you'd actually care to re-read my initial post before responding in such a tone, I'm only really surprised* how a second beta breaks something that's a core feature AND has always worked. I have no problem with bugs/glitches and errors from new code. As I pointed out in my initial post, I'm perfectly happy to accept all that being 'beta' entails.

Taking Bab's hugely amusing picture into account, no doubt you'd be surprised though if pressing on the accelerator resulted in the car stereo switching radio stations, not actually accelerating?

That's the observation i was making.

As for the other posts contrasting MS and Apple's approaches to software quality.....if the end-user doesn't fiddle with it or the hardware it's on in the first place, both are equally robust in my experience.

* as in "ooh, that's interesting' not 'Oh I'm so disappointed and enraged I'm going to weep till i die because the jesusphone isn't working properly'. I'm a geek, not a fanboi.

Clearly not.

It has not shipped, it is a developer release of a big code revision. It has been released to developers to get to grips with Multitasking.

Gwilo, out stuff gets updates all the time.

One recent update triggered an issue where the maintenance request message showed randomly. All that was changed in the release was the addition of Russian language option and a few language changes on messages that showed in German rather than English.

Engineers ran round updating several hundred machines. One wed morning, they all decided over night they wanted a service, even though the counter and/or dates hadnt been reached. Cue running round downgrading machines and trying to explain to customers their machine doesnt need a service. :dull:
