Loud hissing when boosting?

I have had my Octavia II Vrs for about 4-5 months now and only noticed when having the windows open with the recent weather that there is quite a loud hissing whilst changing gears and boosting, but no wastegate dumping noise? Is this normal for a Vrs or could it be a cracked/loose pipe somewhere. I was considering briging the car into Skoda to check this out, but dont want to waste money when the noise may just be normal. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, I had a similar thing on my fabia vrs I think, is this loud hissing at it's loudest when you are accelerating hard through 2000 to 2500 rpm? with a sound like rushing air? which then gradually disappears as the revs rise? If so then I think you have the same thing happening. I didn't say problem because it isn't, it's just a characteristic that has developed, mine did after a service. What it is is the air rushing through the intake trunking at high speed as the rev range I described is the range at which the turbo is creating maximum boost, therefore maximum air pressure and flow in the pipe work. Mine did it until the day I sold the car and I assume is still doing so for the new owner.

Im just not used to hearing this from a diesel - I would've expected a bit of turbo chatter and then a wastegate woosh when changing gear?

If you not happy then just tell him to hiss off! :rofl: There shouldn't be any wastegate chatter or whossh when changing gear unless someone has fitted an aftermarket dump valve to the system, doesn't do anything on road cars just makes a noise which boy racers think will make the girls come running to drop their knickers!! :giggle:

don't talk to me about boy racers, While I was cleaning up the VRS last weekend I heard this awful straight through exhuast rasp and then a dumpvalve hiss and looked up to see a chav revving the life out of a poor MK4 Golf GTI T, I think he was trying to impress me, next his bint stepped out of the car looking at me to see if I was impressed, I laughed and continued cleaning the car LOL!!!

Crimson, did you remember to listen to the car to see if the noise reduced as the revs rose towards the redline?

My VRS petrol makes a similar sort of noise particularly if you accelerate hard but from a highish gear. So if for example I decide to boot it in 3rd at about 1500rpm when really I should be in second to get the best acceleration, the hissing whooshing noise happens until the revs reach a level that the engine isn't labouring so much I haven't really looked at what rev range it occurs but I know it's low down.

I put this down to design rather than fault.... I might be wrong.

Guys it's been quite a few months since I updated this thread

I finally got this problem resolved, unfortunately I was not able to get a resolution on the forum

I took it down to the local Skoda dealer and blagged a "Skoda certified Mechanic" to take it for a test drive

I advised the mechanic to have the windows opened so he could hear the hissing while boosting he replied "aye mate" fumbled for the window controls but didn't actually open the windows, So I opened them for him :dull:

He then heard the hissing but agreed he could not notice any power loss either but adivsed the hissing was not normal

He opened the bonnet checked around the engine after confirming it hissed when the car was revved when stationary

He discovered a bit of oil on an area of the engine which concerned me and he advised he had found a cracked air pressure pipe

I then dreaded the cost of the new pipe and fitment, so I let him get me a quote for the part which was hilarious as both a Skoda mechanic and parts manager found it very difficult to identify which replacement part I needed from the Skoda parts system

evetually they agreed on an air pressure pipe with a generic part no. and I ordered it. I then asked how much it would cost to replace and got a reply from a service assistant of "it could take anything from 30mins to 5hrs" after he spoke behind the scenes to a "Skoda Mechanic" and the base charge rate was £37 per hour

I therefore said "dont worry about it I'll get the part and get it fitted elsewhere"

A week later I got the part and took it to a guy who had worked on Skodas before and he phoned after an hour to say there was no cracked air pressure pipe it was a missing "o" ring from the pipe they ruled as cracked

The car is running great now - but my lesson learned from this issue was not to automatically go to a car dealer that is supposed to specialise in your car as this doesn't necessarily mean they will fix or diagnose your car to the standard you would expect!

Crimson, Glad to hear you got it sorted in the end. Can yu tell me the part number of the alledgedly cracked air pressure pipe please?

Hi Andy,

I actually binned the docket that came with the pipe, but I will check the pipe to see if there is a unique part no. on it and will post up the details tomorrow. The additional problem was that the pipe did not come with the O ring I needed. The mechanic working on my car had to get one custom made :(

my fabia does this now its an 06 with 25k on the clock, but also the airbox isnt selaed properly. could this cause a Similar sound?

It could well do, the hissing sound is air escaping under pressure when the turbo does its thing.

i sealed the airbox and it still does it :( its going to the dealership on saturday to be looked at under warrenty, plus there is oil leaking from the intercooler bottom pipe when i look through the gap in the under belly plate. part of me thinks this is where the noise will be coming from

Hi had my skoda fabia vrs since January and car no noises at all!! Clutch was slipping and gad a new clutch and fly wheel and now there's a very loud rattling from engine since had bits changed, plus the garage hasn't got the slightist clue in what it is?? Can any one shed n e light thank you

It's very simple if u have a loud hissing on boost u ether have a inter cooler leak or inter cooler pipe leaking.

I'd say hissing but it's more vibrating than hissing and IRS only dun it since had new parts put on with tanvics and had a map reading today cus they suggested that it was boosting too much, but came bk fine and tanvics gave washed there hands ov it now and said go to skoda

Sure it's not the Windscreen Viper? Sorry, I couldn't help it....
