Noisy Turbo on my Octavia 2.0 TDi PD140

Recommended Posts

I know its been a while but my turbo has now gone and wondered how the refurbished one was getting on?

I spotted one on ebay:

wondered if anyone had bought from them?

help, car is sat outside a local garage waiting for them to open up.

Hi Lucy,

I've had my reconditioned turbo since 38,000 miles and the car has just turned over 70,000 this week. It works absolutely fine but I'd be interested to know what they actually do when they recondition a turbo because even though it was silent when it went in not long after it developed a very quiet whine like my original turbo. It has not got any worse but as my car was remapped not long after I had it fitted I do wonder if that has put any extra stress on the turbo causing the whine.

Needless to say it is far cheaper to buy and fit a reconditioned turbo than an overpriced new one from Skoda at £1,200-£1,500 =-O

I ordered a recon turbo from midland turbos after getting the numbers off the broken one from my car.

724930-8

g/n kac09112R

hgr 03g 253 014H

I had spotted that gap turbos were selling one matching the same numbers for £290 with 36months warranty but MT wanted £310+vat with 24months warranty, after telling MT of the competitors price they matched it :-)

The garage told me the impeller had broken on my existing one, so not dead sure what the root cause is yet.

The car has had a shark remap on it for 50k miles so I don't think that caused the issue.

As always big thanks to briskoda boys n gals

Car is back on the road and credit must be given to my local garage in lancaster

DA France in Galgate

all work completed for £200 (including parts etc for the oil & filter) and the turbo from midland leaves me £490 lighter but I have a car with no turbo noise at all even though I am being a bit careful at the mo.

My unwell turbo

Can anyone advise what they think I may have done to cause the dfailure or what the engine may be suffering from that caused the turbo to fail please?

The impeller of the turbo is loose and can be wobbled, which is definitley not a good sign either....

Probably nothing at all, the 2.0 BKD engine is unfortunately well known for turbo failures without any obvious cause. I've heard rumours that they don't like variable service intervals but I don't think that's the full story. Nevertheless I've been on fixed servicing with mine and have had no turbo problems (touch wood) in 70K.

How old and how many miles have u got on the car?

Generally it's is a design weakness in the bearing that loosens over time and eventually gives up and explodes. You've avoided the latter by getting it replaced asap or you could have been fixing further engine damage as the turbo explodes and the blades cut through hose, wires and even metal.

how much you pay in total?

Car is 7 years old and 80k miles on the clock, I wonder how well the refurbished one will get on. As above turbo was £290 and labour (with oil change and oil m filter) was £200 so £490 in total. Mostly everything is tracked on fuelly if you want a nosey
