Noisy Turbo on my Octavia 2.0 TDi PD140

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have a noisy turbo on their Octavia 2.0 TDi PD 140? It sounds like the bearing could do with some WD40 as there is a high pitched squeak just as the turbo gets going, it lasts for a split second as the car revs but I can sometimes hold the revs on the sound when moving along slowly. It's not as noticable outside the car as it is from inside the car, so the only reason i'm asking is because a few people have commented lately when i've given them them a lift.

Had the same problem on my Scout. Was more noticeable when the engine was cold, seemed ok once warm, thought it was a belt slipping initially. Took it for a check and was told the turbo was buggered, apparently it's a sign that the vanes are sticking. Fortunately the work, £1700 worth, was done under warranty as the car was 2 yrs old and had only covered 14k. What's more worrying is that I'm now at 21k and I've started to notice a slight "squeak" again when the engines cold and I'm accelerating in 1st or 2nd. Have we had a batch of poor turbos ?

Wonder if you've had it checked and what the conclusion is ?

Well i havent got a spare £1,700 to spend on a new turbo and the car is well out of warranty, so it looks like i could be calling in a favour if the issue is the same as you suggest.

A friend of mine has advised me to check all the pipes coming off the turbo to see if they have any splits in them, he also thinks it could be the 'veins' and asked if the car has been smoking more than normal! I thought it may have been the bearings but it's not a constant high pitched squeek just an occational 'chirp' as the turbo gets going then eases off!

If it comes to it ill get a refurbished 1 and get my m8 to fit it, or possibly consider a hybrid turbo hmmm!

When my turbo went, i had no prior issues of squeaking or strange noises. It just went all at one time.

Also it will only cost that at the dealers, i got a brand new garrett to replace the kkk for 550 quid and fittin was 250 with a service at a vag garage.

£800 sounds loads better than £1700 eh ? The issue with Scouts is that they have to drop the transfer box out to replace the turbo so I'm told, hence extra costs are incurred, even so I don't believe it'd be an extra £900.

We can't say for sure as we haven't heard it , but if passengers are commenting on the noise it's not a good sign.

Mine always had a bit of a siren-like whistle for the first 50k miles , then it got a bit louder and one day the turbo failed and it started screeching very loudly. Fortunately mine was under warranty.

I bought mine with a loud turbo (the police siren efffect) at 58k,

the dealer decided it might need replacing at 75k service as a precaution under warranty.

The warranty people said "No, it's not a fault, it's a characteristic",

another 18 months have elapsed & I just make sure the turbo is allowed to warm up / cool down

and it still sounds as loud at 117k.

I travel in Octavia /Passat /A4 taxis all the time through work.

Taxi drivers reckon VAG turbos either last 30k or 300k.

Very few say they've ever had any advance warning of a turbo failure,

one minute it's fine next minute it's call the AA. :'(

Much apreciated Darren, i've just popped it to the Sport link and said my hello!

Iv'e always noticed the whine of the turbo as it sounds similar to an Ambulance or Police car siren, when I have m8's in the car they tell me to pull over coz they can hear something coming up behind lol, I tell them it's the TURBO making fake Poilice car noises and they say the car is meant to sound like a TAXI not a siren, ******s lol!

Anyway, i'm goona get it checked over with my m8 so fingers crossed it's nothing sinister or at worst something that can be fixed relatively cheaply.

It sounds like you have the normal turbo spooling up thing, some people who have their turbos rebuilt, deliberately set up slightly out of balance to give the whistling noise you describe along with a louder whistle on full boost. The turbo on the fabia vRS I had before did much the same thing.

Ian

most of the PD engines i've driven have all had a loud whistle to them, anything else and I would think there is something wrong

UPDATE...it most definately is the Police siren noise i can hear and it is getting worse. I've been doing some research on the issue and apparently it's quite common with the turbo on the 2.0 tdi PD engine which quite frankly disturbs me when my car has only done 39k! Im lookin into getting a used low milage PD turbo off ebay and fit it myself with my old man, now what I want to know is can i just take the current one off and replace it with another without having to update the ECU as the car has been remapped and I do not want to lose the map?

Does it sound like this?

This is the noise my turbo made at 56,000miles, was replaced under warranty

To be honest, if the replacement turbo is the same part number etc you shouldn't need to get your map changed.

Yes m8 that is the exact same sound, i didnt think i wound need to get the ECU flashed again if all im doing is a 'bolt off bolt on' turbo swap, cheers for that little vid pal :)

No Problem for the vid, It's nice to actually know someone else has the exact same sound which is difficult to explain. fyi, I noticed this noise the weekend I bought my car and once in the garage the mechanic said there was alot of play in the shaft and it was damaged.

I've been in too minds to get in touch with my nearest Skoda dealer and expalin the situation to see if they will cough up some cash for the repair even though the car is out of warranty. My argument will be that the car is not 5 yrs old yet and is well under the average milage for its age, a turbo should last much longer than just 39,000 miles on a car with a full service history! I'm contemplating buying a refurbished turbo on ebay for £295 including delivery, then get the old man and brother in law to help me fit it, that should help save some cash!

That sounds like a good plan, why not try your skoda dealer 1st, you never know they might give a good will gesture towards some of the costs if they get the business. My car has Full Skoda Service History and had 55k on the clock when I bought it.

I'm planning on popping into Skoda today to see what they say, I doubt they will cough up coz they are reluctant to do so when the cars are still under warranty! How can I find out what PART NUMBER my turbo is without taking it off the car coz im still using it? Im assuming mine will be the same as urs?

It most probably will be the same however I don't know what the part number is, from doing the cambelt change this weekend I think the only way you will see the part number will be to get underneath the car. If I get chance tomorrow morning I'll have a look when I've got mine lifted.

I wouldnt have thought the 2.0 TDi 140bhp turbo could differ much between Audi, VW, Skoda or Seat considering VW owns them all, why wouldnt they use the same turbo if they all use the 2.0 tdi 140 engine?! Thanx for ur help tho pal, dont worry if you cant get access to see what part number it, ill ask in Skoda or VW!

I've heard it said that the Scout 2.0 pd uses a smaller Garrett turbo that used to be used on the 1.9 130, not the turbo used on the rest of the 2.0pd cars . Apparently the smaller turbo keeps exhaust temperatures up so the DPF burns off the soot.

NB/ this is just hearsay.

All this talk worries me a little; I swapped from a BMW 320d partly because of reports of turbo fragility...

Thats just bizare coz iv been looking into changing to the BMW 320d/330d once this turbo is sorted, i never thought in a million yrs VW/Skoda would have this sort of issue with a turbo due to its build quality, I would have expected them have come up with a repair or update at least if its this common an issue!

Sorry, it took me alot longer than expected to get my brake pad warning light fixed today and didn't get enough time to look at the turbo model number.

When my turbo started to fail I started looking into Hybrid turbos and from what I could see all PD140's use the same model of turbo although there are several varients some of which covered the PD130's & PD150's.

I have been told by a very good friend that a very good friend of theirs (Well respected VW Mastertech) that the PD140 failures are caused by a number of things but usually down to Long Life servicing on low milage cars, mine went at quite an early age & low milage not to mention it looks like the wrong oil had been used in the last service.

While it sounds like a huge problem, don't forget that forums are full of people asking questions about problems they have/had and don't tend to have many threads on how they've had their car for x number of years with no problems.

There will be a huge amount of PD140 skodas/audis/vws that are sold and I would imagine the amount of turbo failures are acutally pretty low in comparison, the same kind of failures were found on the Fabia vRS, the kkk turbo on earlier models never seemed to be reliable and later into the Fabia production the turbos were changed to Garrett's maybe this was down to the number of failures Skoda saw? if so then the PD140 problems must be alot lower if they didn't feel the need to change the turbo.

^ i agree ^

One refurbished turbo bought on ebay from gap_heads_autoparts for £305. The Turbo part number for my 2.0 TDi PD 140 engine is 03G253010J which I aquired from Skoda Swansea after asking for a price of a new one, wait for it...................£1,128.98 before labour lol! I was then advised to buy a new Oil Feed Pipe available only from a dealer at a cost of £35.09, the turbo is being delivered on monday and ill be trying to fit it with the old man on wednesday, wish me luck chaps!!! Oh ye, the only down side is I have to send my old dodgy turbo back to this company within 2 weeks or a surchage of £150 will be applied, not bad when im saving £823.98 eh :giggle:
