Changing Headlight bulbs on a Superb

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have just come to replace a blown headlamp on my Superb and discovered that the headlamp assembly is like Fort Knox. The owner's manual says "Refer to Dealer" and the dealer has agreed that it is a job that they need to do and it will cost me

Why have Skoda made changing head light bulbs such a pain in their cars? After driving the Octy Mk2 car and finding its head lights to be much better, I decided to finally change the bulbs in the vRS to Osram 50% brighter bulbs. Have not bought them yet but decided to check how easy it is to change and lost some skin getting the head lamp open! Never had this problem with the Felicia or any older car I have owned.

It's not something that's unique to Skoda: it's bloody difficult on lots of modern cars.

I think it's got a lot to do with packaging: there just isn't that much space under the bonnet of a modern car. In addition, lights are now fitted as one unit in production, with all the bulbs and reflectors sealed in one box: it makes manufacturing more simple. It doesn't help us much, though.

Having said that, it's pretty poor that you need to remove the bumper: I'd have thought there would be another way?

If you're still covered by the AA service that Skoda provides and feel bloody-minded enough, then "break down" this evening, with a book ready to pass the time, and call them out.

Seeing how it would be illegal to drive with defective headlights as far as I can see their choice would be either fix you by the roadside (you fortunately keep spare bulbs in the car) or recover you to a dealer. Unless, of course, the AA have a 'no headlights' clause.

You dont have to take the headlight out, i do them in place.

telling him how might help ross, not wishing to sound rude of course just a helpfull pointer

it can be done with the headlights in place, by removing from the back the lid

you must have veeeery small hands though..

Point taken, was just highlighting the fact you dont need to remove the lamps.

On the o/s/f you need to remove the cover on the top of the airbox and the intake pipe. Theres not acres of room but ive got pretty big shovels and I can do them.

And if you are getting multiple bulb failures on the headlights of Superb there are some resistors looms to fit that will cure the problem.

Thanks for all your help. I'll get a bulb and give it a go at the weekend. If my hands are too big i' can always show my 2 year old son how to do it. ;)

  • 2 years later...

I just bought some new Bulbs from Halfords as my dipped light has gone yesterday. today for lunch i thought, yeah no problem. Opened the bonnett and damn its tight in there. I also spoke to Skoda and they said the same thing, need to remove the lights and bumper. Well guess that is what i'll be doing this weekend if i cant get my habds in there.

Mavryk, I have a PDF for the same job on a Passat(Old-shape of course). PM me your email address and I'll gladly email it across to you.

Did you get the uprated bulbs from Halfords? If so, I'll be interested to hear if there is much difference from the standard bulbs.

I want to upgrade my Superb headlight bulbs, but haven't got round to getting any yet. I know others have said it is easier to just remove the front bumper. If only they had made it as straightforward (Loosely speaking!) as the Octy2.

Mavryk, you have mail!:)

Did mine in place ...was tight though .........you do need patience

And extra layers of skin?

Off Topic: Have you had the vibrating air duct issue? If so, did you fix it yourself? Someone suggested putting a couple of self tappers in, but I'm not sure exactly where they ought to go. Can anyone post a pic with the correct locations marked?

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys

Just to say that i replaced the bulbs in place.

Simple really, just need a socket set and determination.

And in answer to the other question around the bulbs. I got two different varieties:

1) Ultra Blue 100W for dipped Headlights.

If you go for Blue lights you really need the 100W version. there are rather dull and rather worse than the standard yellow bulbs (55w) that is standard.

2) Rally 130W for High Beam

When buying these units be careful, they come in two varieties, 100W and 130W. They have no model number difference and exactly the same description and Bulb Code. Even the Halfords people didn't realise. I've had the 100W before and they were pretty good. I now have the 130W and I'm certain i can see through peoples curtains into their ..... living room. The only problem I have found with the 130W version is if you are going down a country road you cant see peoples headlights coming round the corner. Their lights seem to make no effect to my lite area.

Well thats it really.

Cheers again for all your help guys, especially Tiptronic for trying to send me the PDF. My junk mail filter must of blocked it as it never arrived. :(

Hi Mavryk

Sorry the file didn't get through. When I get home, I'll see if I can post it directly to the forum.

What we really need is someone to write a guide for us numpties! Any volunteers?

I'll have a go later at posting the Passat PDF file to this thread, and see if maybe that could be a useful start point.

Passat PDF file as promised!

Please note, this file was not created by me. It was posted a long time ago by another user, and the information relates to the Superbs half-brother.
