Engine managent light

Featured Replies

hi guys, new on here...hello everyone.

had a 1.8t 20v b5 passat for 4 years & sold it 6 months ago & brought a porsche 944 s2 as i really wanted one.

however, doing about 12-14 miles to gallon, and due to the fact i recieved a good offer on it,£500 more than i paid i sold it on last week and i've just brought an 03 octavia vrs 1.8t 20v.

pretty much same as passat and lovely to drive.

had an engine light come on though, and just had faults read & cleared

was told it'll either be turbo boost sensor or lamdor sensor, is this about right?? chap told me to drive car hard down dual carriage way & if light come back on its boost sensor. If not it is lamdor sensor, and these are a very common fault on passat.

also, got a bit of a knocking noise from back, i'm assumming cv joint or something, also very common on passats.

any other common problems to look out for?

many thanks

carl

No, it means that you have a serious engine problem. Sometimes it might be a false alert.

They share the same chassis as the Mk4 Golf - the Superb would be the same chassis as the B5 Passat. The engines are pretty much the same however although I suspect the Passat was a 150bhp 1.8T with the older K03 turbo.

As for the fault codes - did the garage not give you the actual fault codes?

If they did you can look them up on here http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes

If not then you will have to wait for the EML light to come on again and get them scanned again, just telling you "it could be one thing or the other" doesn't really help! You can buy fault code scanners for £20 off of ebay that will save you paying a garage every time.

Er, the vRS is FWD, and doesn't have rear driveshafts! A knocking nose from the rear is most likely to be a mis-hung exhaust or a broken exhaust hanger (system is a tough piece of kit, but the brackets aren't).

A freind at work had this, all they done was clean the breather pipes and had it reset, the light has now gone. Common fault
