V Belt Tensioner bolt sheering Problem

Featured Replies

My little 1.9 SDi Fabia estate is loverly.

Only 2 problems so far (well 3 but i think the wheels need balancing, 4 if you include lack of power), the rear boot lock doesn't work all the time and occasionally lets me open up with out having to go to the driovers side, the second is a much more serious problem.

After 1 years of relatively trouble free motoring, i had a whine, the tensioner needed to be replaced. As i was taking it to the garage to get it replaced, it sheered off (luckly at tick over). The replacement, sheered off after a month and im not a high milage driver. 4 months pass no problem, Drove 170 miles one day no hassel. Taking rubbish to tip and tensioner falls out. Go to garage and the bolt that holds it in had sheered off. They replaced it for £10 (took 3/4 hr so not bad price) 70 miles later it sheered off again.

Has anyone else had this problem and is it only solved with a high tensile 8mm bolt?

Hi, The problem probably won't be the tensioner or the bolt, you'll need to get the alternator pulley checked. They have a clutch mechanism inside them which allows it to run @ a different speed to the engine, when it fails it puts more strain on the main tensioner causing it to fail.

Thanks. A mate has said to me about the same problem. So far this week i've sheered 3 bolts over 250 miles. Getting handy at replacing the bolt. :D
