New v dealer demo

Featured Replies

Decided to buy my Monster new rather than wait for a dealer / manufacturer demo as I have in the past, based on the notion it might be some while before I could pick up an SE (preferred trim level) with the key requirements of the off-road button hill hold, rough road pack and a spare wheel.

After regularly browsing the second hand Monster market I think this view was correct. Not seen an SE advertised with any of these features (with the exception of the spare) let alone them all together, most are standard with the exception of metallic paint. Obviously dealers are not wanting to highly spec up a demo to lose money come resale time but I'm surprised non appear to have opted for the off-road button on the 4x4 versions; would have thought this to be good selling point for little initial outlay.

Also note most SMOC members have also bought new even though there are a number of Yeti's now appearing on the dealers used forecourts. So are my fellow Monster owners of the same mind or do you just prefer new :wonder:

Oh a further note: will have a similar problem when my good lady decides to change her car, as we prefer if possible to have ESP fitted. Sadly at the moment few manufactures or importers i.e. SUK see such an important safety feature should standard ahead of fancy stereo's or alloy wheels.

Hi TP,

Mine came with Park assist, off road button and a spare. It had only completed 1500 miles.

Hi TP,

I specifically wanted the 170 CR engine, none of which were delivered as demo or indeed into the country at all.

Since this is my second "this might be the last new car I can afford" it is specced as I wanted it.

My Ex demo 140tdi Elegance cost much less than a new SE. Off road button is standard and negotiated the spare foc in addition to the repair kit. Has'nt got the off road pack.

It should also be worth a bit more than an SE when I come to sell too. I'd always go for a higher spec ex demo rather than new lower spec - if they are available.

Interesting thread, TP. My preference was to spec accurately as I wanted it, and tolerate the wait (8 weeks only for me).

Secondly - I distrust demo cars. They've been subjected to ham-fisted drivers who want to check acute acceleration and then the noise at screaming revs in the red! Then they stomp on the brakes to see if the ABS works as it should. Then, in the YETI especially, drive it over the really rough stuff to be sure it drives over really rough stuff... ... ... ...

Its a bit like having a dog! Have it from a puppy and you stand a chance of training it the way you want instead of inheriting someone else's mistakes and rough handling. (Hmmm - sounds a bit like finding a new "wife" after a divorce... ... ...).

So whilst it is nice to have something "NOW", it is better to actually choose what you really really want.

Hi all

I went looking for an SE 110 TDI with off-road button, spare wheel, metallic paint, hill hold, off road button, heated seats and light assistant. This would have had about a 10 week wait.

I asked the question as to whether the 140 elegance demo was going to be up for sale (this was end-February) and was told it would be available early April at a price a bit less than the SE above.

In the event, I took delivery on 18th March. I have since fitted the spare wheel and associated flooring and tools.

My Yeti had 3,800 miles on when I took it and as it was first registered 6th Jan 2010, was less than 3 months old.

I'm extremely pleased with it.

Regards

John

I've had several ex demos and never experienced anything untoward. My last Octavia, my wife's Roomster and now my Yeti have all been just right. I always check everything very carefully but most people that I know who try a demo car tend to take it quite gently as they are not that familiar with it.

There again our 7 year old Staffie cross came from the RSPCA at about a year old and he is an absolute delight. Well behaved, full of character and good at agility - a bit like my Yeti

Good points.

We alos bought a Fabia Elegance Estate (mark 1) as an ex-demo a few years ago. No problem.

I bought new because I used to be in the motor trade and saw how some demos were treated. I also wanted ESP which was a factory option on the 1.2 TSI S model that I have. I generally prefer new but would not have a problem buying a delivery mileage pre reg model if it saved a few thousand. Not really going to get many Yetis down that route though - yet.

As an aside, both dogs and women can be taught how to behave no matter how old or what their previous experience!! ;)

That's what we lead you to believe. Psychologically men are much less complicated creatures and therefore I find them much easier to train.

As a further aside, be it dogs or humans the Alpha male will always take control! ;)
