Hit & run

Featured Replies

Yesterday some bugger drove into me, knocking the drivers side wing mirror off. He didn't stop, so it looks like I'll be paying for the repair myself.

Luckily there is no paint off the unit (not even a scratch), and the indicators still work - although the under wing-mirror light no longer works (which could just be a bulb).

The unit snapped off at the point where the wing mirror fixes to the car. It seems there is a large plastic moulding that enables the unit to turn inwards, and this is what appears to have shattered. The wing-mirror didn't come off completely (I suspect it is designed to snap to avoid extensive damage), and is now hanging by the large electrical casing that holds all the wires for the various motors etc..

Does anyone know if I'll have to get a completely new unit, or whether just the broken bit can be replaced? I'm expecting a bill of £200 plus from the main dealer if I have to have a completely new unit....

Cheers

Well, I've taken the car to the garage this morning, and although the painted cover looks ok, it appears that the clips that hold the cover in place have broken off - so it has to be a whole new unit :'( , which has to be painted :'( - so the total bill comes to £320....hope the police find the bugger that did it on the CCTV cameras!!! Bring back hanging is what I say!!! lol

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the git that did it to pay. I had a similar thing with a renaul scenic mirror; someone punched it whilst it was on our drive overnight, the police had him (he'd been doing much fighting/aggro that night) neighbours had given a statement to the police saying it was him; got a court date; CPS dropped the case due to 'insufficient evidence' Pah!

Hope you have more luck with yours.

I'm not holding my breath! The police said if they could identify the car from the CCTV they'd prosecute him for not stopping at the scene of an accident, in which case I'd take him to the small claims court and try and get my costs back - but I suspect the CCTV will not show anything - it would be just my luck! lol

Even if they do find the incident on the CCTV the low resolution of most systems will make identifying the culprit almost impossible.

The police phoned me yesterday to tell me they couldn't identify the car - looks like I'm paying for it myself then! :'(

Sadly, police over there don`t have as good cameras as the CSI-bunch does. They ALWAYS can just ZOOM close enough and see the license plate of the car... :giggle: or if not, then they can identify the car by investigating paint residue that is left to your car from the run-away`s car....

They can enhance any image! Or analyse the tyre treads and narrow it down to a make, model and year of car.

Clever sods.

Sorry to hear about your mirror :(
